Story-inspired potions, outdoor reading and a garden canopy give Chipperfield Preschool a recognisable character in its November 2022 account of daily life. Based at The Small Hall in Chipperfield, it has 20 places in total. This is a small setting by capacity, rather than a statement about how many children attend together.
At its November 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the preschool Good overall and identified communication and language as a clear educational priority. The children attending then were aged 2 to 11, a historical age range that should not be treated as today's admission offer.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care: here, the November 2022 examples show learning through stories, conversation, sensory exploration and play. Reading spaces were spread between the indoor environment and the secure garden, giving books a place in outdoor activity too.
In November 2022, Room on the Broom provided the starting point for children to investigate story characters and objects, then invent potions in the outdoor kitchen. That connected a book with practical exploration rather than leaving the story at reading time. Spaghetti and custard also became sensory materials, with staff introducing descriptive vocabulary as children explored their textures.
Outdoor play had practical structure. In November 2022, children drew directional chalk markings to guide bicycle and scooter riding, practising how to share space safely. A garden canopy supported outdoor access in different weather conditions. Group artwork sessions gave children opportunities to show their creations and receive encouragement from others.
At the November 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and praised SEND support, including individual adult help from staff who understood the children's needs. These are dated findings, rather than a current assurance.
In November 2022, staff gathered information from families about children's abilities and interests before planning activities. During firework painting, children reluctant to use their hands could try brushes or string instead. The adaptation mattered: children could participate through a different technique rather than abandon the activity.
Children sought comfort from familiar staff in November 2022, including when tired or after a fall. Communication with families included detail about children's development and ways to continue learning at home, connecting preschool experiences with family life.
The address is The Small Hall, The Common, Chipperfield, Kings Langley, WD4 9BS.
In November 2022, session times were 7.30am to 9am, 9am to 3pm and 3.15pm to 6pm. Those historical windows describe the arrangements at that visit; they do not establish a current booking pattern. At the same date, the preschool provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four.
Chipperfield Preschool merits consideration for families who value language development, books and practical outdoor play. Its November 2022 examples give that judgement substance: stories led to experiments, sensory materials prompted conversation, and painting was adapted to help children participate. The qualification is important: the Good judgement and daily-life account belong to November 2022, and the teaching recommendation deserves attention when assessing today's provision.
Ofsted rated it Good overall at the inspection on 8 November 2022. The improvement recommendation concerned making teaching more flexible so that children's learning could be extended more consistently.
It has 20 places in total. That is whole-setting capacity, not a room size or the number attending a particular session.
