A tree of wonderful words gives this preschool a memorable identity: in June 2023, staff shared newly learned vocabulary with parents and added words to the tree of wonderful words. That small detail captures the appeal of Jack in the Box at Brockswood, on Brockswood Primary School's site in Hemel Hempstead.
At its June 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the setting Outstanding, with examples of carefully adapted play, ambitious learning and effective language teaching. The nursery has 74 places in total; the children attending at that visit were aged two to four. That age range describes the inspection cohort rather than a current admissions limit.
Morning and afternoon sessions sit alongside Breakfast Club, Lunch Club and Tea Club. The separate booking patterns give families more than a single attendance option, although the conflicting session schedules deserve attention before booking.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for learning through play, with parents involved in understanding children's development. It is the common early-years foundation, rather than an extra programme. Here, child-led choices sit alongside activities planned around a child's next steps, giving the day both freedom and direction.
Small Group Time is a group-wide routine used here: children work daily with the same practitioner on skills and their next steps. Stories, Songs & Rhymes is another group-wide element, included in each session to support communication and an interest in books. The practical benefit is a recognisable rhythm, with opportunities to practise alongside a familiar adult.
Child Initiated Play lets children choose their play indoors and outside, while Adult Initiated Activities introduce tasks based on their development. These group-wide routines leave room for individual interests rather than making every child follow the same activity throughout a session.
In June 2023, the cutting station accommodated different stages of development through cutting, tearing, snipping and scrunching paper. Older children hunted for letter pebbles and paired them with letter mats; younger children explored textures while finding shells and pebbles. The materials could support different tasks, so children did not need identical skills to take part.
Bucket time, also observed in June 2023, used a paper butterfly to introduce movement words. An interactive story added twigs and mud to the experience. Elsewhere, an ice-cream parlour activity involved scented dough, cones and sprinkles, bringing conversation and hand movements into imaginative play. These were concrete ways to connect words with actions and objects.
Free-flow play includes access to both indoor and outdoor activities. This makes outdoor play part of the session's choices, rather than a separate subject added to the timetable.
In June 2023, children moved water from large containers into watering cans to tend newly planted garden areas. They also grew fruit and vegetables. The garden gave them a reason to use equipment, remember what plants need and take responsibility for something living. Mathematical play included ordering numbered cards and matching full and empty containers with labels: ideas were explored through doing.
Learning journals provide a practical connection between home and nursery. Parents can discuss them with their child's key person at any time, as well as through the group-wide Open Classroom arrangement, which brings families into their child's learning during the term. This gives conversations a concrete starting point: the child's activities and development.
In June 2023, staff shared children's new vocabulary with parents through the tree of wonderful words. A monthly health challenge also involved families, with changing from juice to water in bottles given as an example. Both practices connected nursery experiences with what happened at home, rather than leaving parents with only a general account of the day.
At the June 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and reported that learning gaps were closing rapidly, including for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Those are dated judgements. During that month, staff also helped children recognise feelings and work through disagreements over toys, using consistent language about behaviour.
The nursery participates in the group-wide Operation Encompass partnership, an early-intervention arrangement linking police and education following domestic abuse incidents. Information can reach the nursery before the next nursery day, allowing safeguarding staff to consider support for the child; participation describes an arrangement, rather than proving its effectiveness.
Children bring lunch from home, while fruit, milk, water and other snacks are provided during sessions. The nursery asks families to exclude nut products and prepare food in pieces that are safe for their child to eat.

The Brockswood fee schedule gives an AM Session from 9am to noon and a PM Session from 1pm to 3pm. Breakfast Club runs from 8am to 9am, Lunch Club from noon to 1pm, and Tea Club from 3pm to 4pm. These are separately named booking options, so the clubs should not be read as an automatic extension of either session.
In June 2023, opening hours were 8am to 4pm on weekdays during term time. That describes the operating pattern at the inspection, rather than establishing today's closure calendar.
In June 2023, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. Paid sessions and clubs also form part of the attendance offer. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation, which should distinguish the session booking from any additional club attendance.
The lunch arrangement is parent-provided. Snacks are supplied during sessions, but that provision alone does not establish their charging treatment.
The nursery occupies school grounds. Attendance here does not guarantee a Reception place; families still apply through the local authority admissions process.
Jack in the Box at Brockswood suits families considering morning or afternoon preschool sessions, with separately named clubs around them. Its June 2023 examples give substance to the Outstanding judgement: shared vocabulary, adaptable practical tasks and garden activities made learning tangible. The current routines also give parents clear ways to discuss their child's development. The session timetable and the full charging structure are the practical points to settle before committing.
