Jack in the Box at Yewtree

At a Glance

Children's interests set the direction at Jack in the Box at Yewtree: a fascination with vehicles became a chance to explore mechanics, safety equipment and the language of car parts in November 2024. The practical detail matters. Play supplied a reason to learn new words, rather than vocabulary becoming a separate exercise.

Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding at its 26 November 2024 inspection, finding that its ambitious teaching supported exceptional progress from children's starting points. The setting has 36 places in total, at Cattsdell in Hemel Hempstead. Children attending in November 2024 were aged two to four; that is an inspection-time age range.

The current day combines small-group learning, stories and child-chosen indoor and outdoor play. Morning and afternoon sessions sit alongside Breakfast Club, Lunch Club and Tea Club, giving families several distinct parts of the day to consider.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for learning through play, with parents involved in children's development and progress. It is the shared foundation for early-years provision. Here, the daily structure gives children both time to choose their activities and time with a practitioner working on their next steps.

Small Group Time, a group-wide routine used at Yewtree, brings children together daily with the same practitioner to develop particular skills. That continuity gives the adult repeated opportunities to work on a child's next steps. Stories, Songs & Rhymes, another group-wide routine, runs through each session, supporting language and an interest in books.

Child Initiated Play lets children choose activities indoors and outside, while Adult Initiated Activities draw on what they need to learn next. These are group-wide elements used at this branch. The balance is useful: children's choices shape part of the session, and adults also introduce activities with a specific learning purpose.

In November 2024, children practised participating in groups through shorter singing and storytelling activities before moving towards longer circle-time sessions. Participation was built gradually. For a child still learning to listen alongside others, that offers a more manageable progression than starting with a lengthy group activity.

Outdoor and Community Life

Indoor and outdoor play are both part of children's choices during the session. In November 2024, the garden also supplied everyday learning opportunities: putting on boots became a discussion about size, colour and patterns. Ordinary preparation for outdoor play gave children concrete objects to compare and describe.

The vehicle example showed the same connection between interest and teaching. In November 2024, children explored books about car parts and considered appropriate safety equipment while pretending to be mechanics. The activity joined imaginative play to language and practical understanding, rather than leaving the interest as a passing theme.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

Learning journals give parents a way to discuss their child's development with the key person, either individually or through termly Open Classroom opportunities. These group-wide arrangements are used at Yewtree.

In November 2024, families also had consultation meetings, take-home activities and a lending library. These gave parents concrete ways to continue learning beyond the session. Families could access medical and dental services through the nursery, extending support beyond classroom activities.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

At the November 2024 inspection, Ofsted found effective safeguarding and exceptional support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), including individual attention, close key-person relationships and coordinated work with other professionals. That finding is significant for families whose child needs support tailored to communication or emotional development.

In November 2024, staff worked with professionals on teaching strategies and shared appropriate information with other settings children attended. They also observed children in those other environments. This connected the support around a child across settings, rather than treating each session in isolation.

An area devoted to recognising feelings and managing behaviour had been developed by November 2024 in response to children's emotional needs. It gave this part of development a physical place within the learning environment.

Operation Encompass is a group-wide police and education safeguarding partnership used at Yewtree to share information following domestic abuse incidents before the next nursery day. Designated safeguarding staff have undertaken training for this arrangement; it provides an information-sharing mechanism rather than a separate assurance about safeguarding quality.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The AM Session runs from 9am to noon; the PM Session runs from 1pm to 3pm. Breakfast Club covers 8am to 9am, Lunch Club noon to 1pm, and Tea Club 3pm to 4pm. Each is a named part of the booking structure, so families can distinguish the learning sessions from the surrounding clubs.

In November 2024, the nursery operated Monday to Friday during term time. For families planning childcare around employment, that dated operating pattern deserves attention alongside the current session choices.

Funding and Paid Extras

Morning and afternoon sessions and the surrounding clubs have separate prices; current prices come in the nursery's written quotation. In November 2024, the setting provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four.

Parents supply lunch, with instructions to prepare food safely and avoid products containing nuts; children receive fruit, milk, water and other snacks during their session. Lunch is eaten with practitioners and other children, making it a shared part of the day.

Things to Consider

  • Session choices. Morning and afternoon sessions have different lengths, with Breakfast Club, Lunch Club and Tea Club around them. At a visit, discuss which combination fits your child's routine and your working day.
  • Term-time planning. In November 2024, provision ran during term time on weekdays. Consider how that pattern would fit your family's holiday childcare needs.
  • Food and allergies. Lunch comes from home, and the nursery asks families to avoid nut-containing products. Families affected by allergies should confirm current food-handling practice.
  • Funded attendance and extras. Funded early education was provided in November 2024. Ask how a funded booking works now, including any charges for food or non-food consumables.

The Verdict

Yewtree suits families weighing morning against afternoon attendance, with separate clubs around those sessions. Its strongest educational detail is the connection between children's interests and purposeful adult teaching: vehicles, books and even boots became opportunities to extend understanding in November 2024.

The Outstanding judgement gives that dated picture considerable weight. Current small-group routines, child-chosen play and learning-journal conversations provide practical reasons to consider the nursery, while the term-time pattern and lunch arrangements need to fit family life.
