The Play Hut

At a Glance

Paint-covered trucks, balance bikes and vegetable growing give The Play Hut's February 2022 account its character: children explored through play, with activities adjusted to their interests and learning needs. The practical appeal was hands-on learning alongside familiar care.

At its February 2022 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good, found safeguarding effective and recognised effective support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Two improvements were required: deeper teaching outdoors and a review of babies' sleeping arrangements.

The Darlington setting has capacity for 69 children, with an age range of 0 to 132 months. Full days are offered.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care: play, communication and everyday routines all contribute to learning. In February 2022, activities included songs for babies, paint exploration for younger children and drawing, books and mathematical games for older children.

Support varied with the child. During dough play that February, some children practised recognising shapes while others tackled counting challenges. Staff repeated unfamiliar words with babies and used stories to expand older children's vocabulary. These examples show how one activity could accommodate different stages of development.

Outdoors in February 2022, balance bikes supported physical play and older children planted vegetables. However, staff sometimes missed chances to develop children's ideas and knowledge. Outdoor access and purposeful teaching were separate questions here; the latter needed attention.

Care and Support

In February 2022, staff working with babies understood their routines, prepared bottles and comfort items, and responded to gestures and other non-verbal signals. Settling visits involved new children and their families, giving staff a chance to establish familiarity.

Baby sleep was the significant caution in that February account. Some babies slept in pushchairs that could not recline flat, while half of the baby room was regularly out of use. The sleeping arrangements required review.

Independence also featured in February 2022: younger children practised putting on outdoor clothing, while older children helped themselves to lunch. Preparation for school included sustained drawing, independent name writing and number play. Staff training included work on baby care and mathematical consultancy for those working with older children.

Practical Information

The Play Hut is at 347 North Road, Darlington, DL1 3BL. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with closures on bank holidays and for one week at Christmas.

In February 2022, sessions ran from 8am to 6pm and funded early education was provided for two-, three- and four-year-olds. Those funding arrangements describe that period.

Things to Consider

  • Baby sleep. In February 2022, some pushchairs used for sleep could not recline flat. A visit should include a discussion of today's sleep arrangements and usable baby-room space.
  • Outdoor teaching. The February 2022 improvement point concerned staff extending learning outdoors. Look for how practitioners develop children's questions during physical play and growing activities.
  • Attendance and funding. Full days and year-round opening suit a regular childcare routine. What current booking and funding arrangements would apply to your child's age and intended attendance?

The Verdict

The Play Hut suits families seeking full-day, year-round childcare and interested in practical play alongside increasing independence. Its February 2022 account gives concrete examples across babies' care and older children's learning. The balanced decision is to weigh those examples against the two dated improvement points, especially if choosing care for a baby.
