Thornhill Day Nursery & Pre-school

At a Glance

A separate sleep room for babies and a preschool reading corner with a swinging chair give Thornhill two useful points of difference: space to rest and space to linger over a story. The garden adds another dimension, with direct outdoor access and room for movement. These are concrete reasons to consider this Derby nursery, especially if your priorities include outdoor play and a clear separation between busy play and baby sleep.

At its 19 May 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated Thornhill Good overall. That judgement is dated; the current physical offer includes age-specific rooms, a nursery chef and daily garden play. Thornhill Day Nursery & Pre-school has 70 places in total, with an age range of one month to 60 months.

Full-day attendance and term-time funded places serve different family routines, although the standard booking rules require regular attendance. The practical fit deserves as much attention as the rooms.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

The Baby Room, for children from six weeks to 12 months, combines sensory exploration with a separate sleep room, giving rest its own space away from the main activities.

For children aged one to two, the First Steps Room emphasises movement and imaginative play, with space to explore as children become more mobile.

Sharing and cooperation sit alongside creative play in the Toddler Room, for two- to three-year-olds, where toys and resources support exploration and early social experiences.

The Pre-School Room, for children aged three to five, combines preparation for primary school with direct garden access and a reading corner whose swinging chair gives books an inviting setting.

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care: play and everyday routines help children practise communication, movement and relationships. Thornhill's group-wide In the Moment teaching method adds an emphasis on children's interests, with activities shaped around what engages them and opportunities to develop language and early number skills.

In May 2022, learning followed a sequence across age groups, with children's interests helping staff choose activities. The limitation was the next step: sometimes an activity repeated something a child could already do rather than introducing a further challenge. Counting was one example. Staff also sometimes introduced a different resource before a child had finished exploring the first one. Both findings matter for parents who want child-led play to include sustained attention and purposeful adult input.

Physical experiences were varied in May 2022. Babies rolled and threw balls; children practised balance on a slide; toddlers poured drinks and carried cups through the garden. Preschool children took part in dance, experimenting with different movements while keeping space between themselves and others. These observations describe that period rather than a current timetable of sessions.

Outdoor and Community Life

Garden play is a daily part of the current offer, including wet-weather days. Trikes, running and insect hunts provide different ways to use the space: energetic movement alongside slower exploration. For a child who enjoys moving between interests, the garden broadens the choices beyond indoor play.

Preschool children can move directly between their room and the outdoors. That arrangement lets an activity continue outside rather than making every change of setting depend on a separate group outing. The indoor reading corner provides a quieter counterpoint, so the physical environment makes room for both movement and time with books.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

Famly is the group-wide parent communication app used at Thornhill to share children's nursery experiences and milestones. Its practical value is continuity: parents have a route for hearing about the day alongside conversations with staff.

In May 2022, staff built familiarity with children's preferences, interests and sleep routines. Babies explored at their own pace, with adults offering reassurance as new resources were introduced. Parent communication included detailed learning updates and ideas for supporting the next stage at home. A lending library also connected nursery reading with family time, while oral-health information brought an everyday care topic into those conversations.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

At the May 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and identified careful assessment by the special educational needs coordinator, close work with outside professionals, and frequent communication with families about children's development. This is useful detail behind the judgement: support involved identifying needs and coordinating responses, rather than relying on a broad promise of inclusion.

Sleep has a physical place in Thornhill's current layout. The separate baby sleep room matters for families balancing nursery attendance with a child's daytime rest, because it separates sleeping space from the main play environment. In May 2022, sleeping children were monitored closely and staff paid attention to individual routines.

Meals are prepared by Thornhill's own nursery chef, with nutrition guidance informing the menus. In May 2022, dietary requirements informed meal preparation and procedures checked that each child received the appropriate food.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Thornhill is at 10 Thornhill Road, off Albany Road, Derby, DE22 3LX. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. Full-day sessions run from 7.30am to 6pm.

The standard minimum is two full days each week. Where a booking covers no more than three full days, it must include Monday or Friday. This condition can materially affect a working pattern: a family seeking only middle-of-the-week care needs to take the rule into account before settling on its preferred days.

The nursery operates across the year, closing for bank holidays and a week at Christmas. Its branch funding arrangements also include term-time-only places for the supported two-year-old entitlement and the universal three- and four-year-old entitlement. Those follow school terms over 38 weeks, excluding holiday childcare, and allocation is first come, first served under the admissions policy.

Funding and Paid Extras

Thornhill offers 15 hours for children aged two receiving additional support, 15 hours for all three- and four-year-olds, and 30 hours childcare for eligible working families. For the working-family entitlement, children aged nine months and over may qualify. Eligibility and the booked attendance pattern remain separate matters.

Funded hours can be stretched over 51 weeks for care across the year. Additional paid sessions can supplement the entitlement. The funding application uses Funding Loop, an online system for completing the relevant local authority forms; families must register with it to authorise the nursery's claim. Working-family codes need renewal every three months.

Food and snacks are included in standard paid sessions. On funded days, meals and snacks are charged separately, so a funded entitlement does not remove every childcare cost. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.

Fees are paid in advance each month, on the first, using Direct Debit, Tax-Free Childcare or a combination of the two. Annual charges are spread into 12 equal monthly bills using 51 weeks, with bank holidays and a staff development day included in billing. Additional charges apply for late collection and late payment.

An initial registration charge applies when formally requesting a place. If the exact attendance pattern cannot be offered, withdrawing the registration brings a refund; accepting a place makes that charge non-refundable. A separate acceptance payment is deducted from the first month's bill.

Things to Consider

  • Weekly pattern. Standard attendance requires two full days, and bookings of up to three full days must include Monday or Friday. Compare that condition with your actual working week before choosing days.
  • Adult input during play. In May 2022, activities sometimes repeated established skills or interrupted children's concentration. During a visit, ask how staff now judge when to extend play and when to let it continue.
  • Baby sleep. Thornhill has a separate sleep room. Discuss how your baby's usual routine would work there, including the reassurance they need to settle.
  • The funded bill. Funded-day food is charged separately, while standard paid sessions include food and snacks. Ask for a written breakdown for your chosen pattern.

The Verdict

Thornhill suits families seeking regular full-day attendance and those considering term-time funded care under its specified entitlements. The garden, separate baby sleep room and preschool reading corner give parents tangible features to weigh against the booking conditions.

The Good judgement from May 2022 provides a dated quality assessment, with clear teaching points to explore alongside it. The strongest practical match is a family whose attendance pattern fits the weekday rules and whose child would benefit from indoor choices, daily outdoor play and dedicated space for rest.
