A separate baby sleeping area and a garden digging pit give Jack and Jill Day Nursery, Corfe Mullen practical character: space for rest and messy exploration.
At its 7 April 2025 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and judged safeguarding effective. Its current capacity is 55 children in total, with the nursery welcoming children from three months to five years. Full-day and half-day combinations are offered year-round.
Ducklings Baby Unit serves babies from approximately three months to two years, combining a separate sleeping area with access to a smaller garden shared with toddlers and an emphasis on early communication, movement and relationships. The baby unit's staff:child ratio is 1:3, the statutory minimum for under-twos.
Squirrels Toddler Room, for approximately two- to three-year-olds, emphasises language, physical coordination and social confidence through indoor and outdoor activities, including practical tasks such as pouring and sorting.
Hedgehogs Pre-school Room, from approximately three years until school, occupies the Big Hall and combines independently accessible activity areas, outdoor access and a self-service snack table with an emphasis on confidence and independence.
Children sometimes mix across age groups for activities and early or late sessions.
The Early Years Foundation Stage sets standards for learning, development and care, including communication, physical development, early reading and maths learned through play. It is the common foundation for early years provision. Jack and Jill's curriculum combines activities led by adults with play initiated by children, using their interests and development to decide what comes next.
Counting and sorting introduce maths; threading and tools practise hand control. Stories build vocabulary, and imaginative play lets children express ideas. Practitioners observe play to plan next steps for each child.
Jo Jingles adds a named music, singing and movement experience, with Wednesday sessions for babies and mobile children. Children over two also have weekly sessions at Kings Lodge Nature Nursery, included among the activities covered by the funded-hours consumables arrangement.
Two enclosed gardens give outdoor play more than one setting. The Big Garden includes a wooden playhouse, planting space and a digging pit, alongside a mud kitchen, water play station and weather station. These resources turn pretend play, investigating weather and working with natural materials into practical experiences. Children have outdoor play and learning each day, with movement between inside and outside encouraged when possible.
The smaller garden keeps outdoor experiences close to the youngest children's rooms. Babies and toddlers also use the larger garden for more active play. Wellies and clothing for wet weather are therefore useful everyday equipment here, rather than items reserved for an occasional outing.
Each child has a key person who helps with settling, follows development and gives parents a regular contact within the room team. Conversations and Famly updates connect nursery experiences with home life. For babies, care routines are shaped around the family's information, and feedback is given after each session.
Once a booking is accepted, settling normally involves at least two sessions. A parent usually stays for the first; a short separation may follow at the second, depending on the child. The arrangement can be adapted, although additional sessions may carry a separate charge. Moves between rooms are gradual too, with introductory visits during the child's usual booked hours.
In April 2025, babies explored soft play while looking towards their key person, and older children had daily opportunities for quiet stories, calming music or yoga.
Support for additional needs involves the Special Educational Needs Coordinator, the family and outside professionals where appropriate. Activities and resources can be adapted, but a placement depends on an individual assessment of what the nursery can safely provide. Staffing, space and available support all enter that decision. This is a mainstream nursery, and specialist care or sustained individual support may exceed what it can offer.
Health needs are handled through written information and, where necessary, a healthcare plan, medication form or risk assessment. Families must also identify allergies and changes in treatment. The separate sleeping area in Ducklings provides a physical provision for rest; nursery bedding is supplied, while children bring their own comforters if needed.
Preparation for school includes changing for PE, school role play and developing personal-care independence. The key person normally passes relevant information to the receiving school, including development and helpful support strategies.
The nursery is at 149 Wareham Road, Corfe Mullen, Wimborne, BH21 3LB, with its entrance on Albert Road. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm Monday to Thursday and 8am to 5pm Friday. Off-road parking is provided for collection and drop-off, with stays limited to 15 minutes.
Morning sessions run from 8am to noon, or to 1pm with the lunch hour; afternoons run from 1pm to 5pm, or to 6pm with tea-time. A standard full day is 8am to 5pm, and an extended day is 8am to 6pm. All 6pm finishes apply Monday to Thursday only.
New bookings normally require four sessions each week, combining half-days and full days, with four hours as the shortest session. Mornings-only and term-time-only bookings are not offered. Children receiving only 11 funded hours have a separately discussed minimum-booking arrangement. The nursery operates year-round and closes on public holidays and for approximately five to ten working days around Christmas and New Year.
Funded childcare is offered on a stretched basis over 51 weeks, with up to approximately 11 or 22 hours each week depending on entitlement and eligibility. Funded bookings currently need at least two afternoon sessions weekly. Paid hours can supplement funding where a booking extends beyond the funded allocation.
Snacks are included in paid-session fees or the funded-hours consumables charge; optional two-course hot lunches come from Dorset Dinners and are charged separately under standard bookings, while Premium packages include them. Families may instead supply a packed lunch under the nursery's nut-free food policy, and parents provide formula or expressed milk for babies who need it.
Standard wipes, nappy cream, bedding and reapplied sun cream are included in paid-session fees or covered by the funded-hours consumables charge. Parents provide nappies and specialist personal-care products required for allergies, sensitivities or medical needs. For funded hours, that separate charge is non-mandatory, has specified benefits-related exemptions and covers activities as well as supplies and snacks; opting out requires four weeks' written notice and applies to the whole arrangement.
A refundable deposit normally applies when sessions are entirely funded; a non-refundable administration charge applies when some or all sessions are paid. Reducing hours or withdrawing requires eight weeks' written notice. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation, with the fees and terms setting out the charge structure.
Jack and Jill suits families seeking year-round full days or a combination of morning and afternoon half-days, with room routines that change as children grow. Separate baby sleep space, daily garden use and practical school preparation give parents tangible reasons to consider it. The Good judgement from April 2025 sits alongside specific improvements needed in adult interaction and children's independence. The deciding questions are how those practices work now and whether the minimum booking and funded-afternoon conditions fit the family's week.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good on 7 April 2025 and found safeguarding effective. Improvement points concerned extending children's learning during play and giving older children more opportunities to act independently.
