A permanent baby gym, adjoining preschool spaces and learning games to use at home give Little Firs Day Nursery a recognisable character: physical play sits alongside growing independence and communication. Based in the grounds of Conifers Primary School in Weymouth, it has 77 places in total for children from birth to five. The school setting is a practical detail, not an admissions advantage.
At its June 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated Little Firs Good, found safeguarding effective and identified good progress, including targeted help for children with additional needs. There were also clear priorities for improvement: more opportunities to connect letters with sounds, and more consistent vocabulary development during activities led by adults. Both matter when judging preparation for school.
Nestlings, Discoverers and Preschool organise the nursery day by developmental stage. Weekday opening extends from 7.30am to 6pm, while an After School & Holiday Club provides a separate offer for older children.
Nestlings serves babies under two, with treasure baskets and sensory exploration alongside singing and signing; its permanent baby gym, soft play equipment and open floor space give movement a concrete place in the day. This is an active baby-room offer, rather than one built solely around tabletop activities.
Discoverers is the room for two- to three-year-olds, accommodating up to 15 children in a light, spacious setting where accessible resources encourage children to choose, use and look after their playthings. That room limit is useful for parents comparing toddler provision. It is a room maximum, not a promise about the number attending on any particular day.
Preschool, for three- to four-year-olds, occupies two connected rooms, with spaces for role play, books, construction, sensory exploration and mark making, followed by planned activities in key-person groups that develop communication, social skills and movement. The arrangement combines independent choices with opportunities to work alongside other children. Preparing for school includes learning to participate, rather than only learning to recognise written symbols.
The EYFS provides the framework for children's learning, development and care: play, conversation and physical activity help children build skills across the day. Little Firs adds concrete opportunities to carry learning between nursery and home through its Online Creative Learning Tools & Games, which parents can use with their children.
Spot The Difference centres on attention and communication, while Jigsaw Puzzle adds problem solving. These are specific options for a shared activity at home, rather than a requirement to reproduce the nursery day. Parents Zone also gives families a way to see what their child has been learning.
In June 2023, older children explored musical instruments and used pictures to identify them, while stories prompted discussion about characters and illustrations. Counting and colours featured in routines as well as planned activities. The next step was clearer: children needed more opportunities to connect sounds with letters, and adults needed to make fuller use of activities to extend vocabulary.
In June 2023, outdoor play occupied a substantial part of children's time, with balancing, jumping, sand and water activities. Younger children practised climbing steps to reach a slide with staff support. These examples show how movement could be practised through play, with help adjusted to the task.
Garden play also included children pretending to be builders, drawing maps and searching together for the things they had depicted. It brought imagination, drawing and cooperation into the same activity. These are inspection-time examples, rather than a timetable of current sessions.
Key-person groups form part of the preschool routine, giving planned shared activities a smaller-group structure. Parents Zone connects that nursery experience with home by letting families follow their child's learning. Together, these provide practical points of contact between daily activities and parents' understanding of them.
In June 2023, staff gathered information from parents alongside their observations to decide what children should learn next. Babies received cuddles and close attention, and older children followed familiar routines. Behaviour guidance included helping children share, take turns and negotiate with one another, so support extended beyond stopping disagreements to practising how to manage them.
At the June 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that staff recognised children needing extra help, worked with the SENCo and other agencies on targeted support, and understood child-protection reporting procedures. This gives the Good judgement useful substance: it covered both children's learning needs and staff responsibilities for their safety.
Current staff training includes paediatric first aid, safeguarding and SEND. Those are arrangements parents can recognise, rather than a substitute for the dated safeguarding judgement. In June 2023, staff also undertook sign-language training to help children who found spoken communication more difficult.
Meals in June 2023 were prepared by an on-site cook, with fruit snacks and conversations about healthy eating. Food therefore featured both as care and as a topic children could discuss.
Little Firs is at Conifers Primary School, Radipole Lane, Weymouth, Dorset DT4 0QF, and opens Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 6pm. It operates across the year, with a Christmas shutdown. Opening hours describe the operating window; the separate club has its own attendance arrangements.
The After School & Holiday Club caters for children from Reception age to 11. Its after-school session runs from 3.15pm to 6pm, with collection permitted during that period; holiday opening is from 7.30am to 6pm, with different sessions offered. Cooking, model making and outdoor play are among the club activities, giving older children choices suited to their stage.
Enquiries can be made by telephone or through the contact form. Children can join throughout the year subject to a place, and Little Firs operates a waiting list. That is a joining rule, not an indication of how many places are free.
The nursery occupies premises within the grounds of Conifers Primary School. Attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Preschool's key-person activities support the move towards school routines, but preparation and admissions are separate decisions.
Little Firs suits families seeking age-based nursery provision with physical play, accessible resources and a connection between learning at nursery and home. The baby gym, toddler room limit and connected preschool spaces give the choice substance. Families seeking after-school sessions or holiday attendance for older children also have a separate club offer.
The June 2023 Good judgement supports the choice, with concrete improvement priorities that deserve equal attention. For the youngest babies, resolve the starting age; for children approaching school, weigh communication and early literacy alongside the practical appeal of the school-site setting.
At its inspection on 28 June 2023, Ofsted rated Little Firs Good and found safeguarding effective. Improvement priorities covered letter-sound connections and vocabulary development during adult-led activities.
The nursery has 77 places in total for children from birth to five. Nestlings serves under-twos, Discoverers covers ages two to three, and Preschool covers ages three to four; the After School & Holiday Club caters from Reception age to 11.
Nestlings has a permanent baby gym and soft play equipment. Preschool uses connected rooms with different activity areas, and Online Creative Learning Tools & Games includes Spot The Difference and Jigsaw Puzzle for use at home.
In June 2023, the nursery received funding for early education for children aged two, three and four.
The After School & Holiday Club runs its after-school session from 3.15pm to 6pm, with children able to be collected during that period. Holiday opening is from 7.30am to 6pm, with different sessions offered.
