Sunshine Corner Nursery

At a Glance

A resident African land snail, home-grown plants and experiments with snow clouds give Sunshine Corner Nursery a recognisable character. These were features of daily life in January 2023: practical experiences that gave children things to investigate, care for and talk about.

Ofsted rated the nursery Good at its 10 January 2023 inspection. It has capacity for 57 children aged 2 to 60 months, at Aylesham CP School, Attlee Avenue, Aylesham, Canterbury, CT3 3BS.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage brings learning, development and care together. In January 2023, this included exploring materials, developing language through conversations and experiments, and practising taking turns.

In January 2023, babies investigated materials with different textures, while toddlers helped care for the African land snail. Older children experimented with snow clouds in a jar, encountering new vocabulary through an activity they could watch unfold. Role play included a hairdresser's chair, where staff joined children in conversation and encouraged turn-taking.

Gardening brought another practical thread to that January 2023 experience. Children tended plants indoors and in the garden, saving fruit and vegetable peelings for compost. This connected caring for plants with reusing everyday waste.

There were clear teaching limitations in January 2023, too. Staff did not consistently establish the order in which children should learn new material. Conversations sometimes moved ahead before children could answer, reducing their opportunity to develop ideas independently.

Care and Support

At the January 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and children with special educational needs and/or disabilities received individual support adapted to their needs, with staff drawing on outside professionals' expertise.

In January 2023, staff used mindfulness activities to support children's emotions and helped children when feelings became difficult to manage. Oral health was part of the day: some children brushed their teeth after meals, and staff had undertaken training to support healthy routines.

Communication with families had a practical form in January 2023. An online application delivered daily updates, alongside suggestions for activities at home. Parents also reported support for children learning English as an additional language.

Safeguarding practice in January 2023 included staff training and reminders about recognising and reporting concerns. Children practised fire evacuations and took road-safety walks locally. Leaders also considered staff workload and mental health, and staff reported feeling valued.

Practical Information

Opening hours are 7.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. The nursery operates across the year, closing for bank holidays and one week at Christmas.

In January 2023, the nursery received educational funding for children aged two, three and four. That is a dated funding position rather than a promise of a funded place.

In January 2023, it operated in a building within the grounds of Aylesham Primary School. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place.

Things to Consider

  • Learning sequence. In January 2023, teaching did not consistently build knowledge in a planned order. On a visit, ask how activities now connect children's earlier learning with their next steps.
  • Time to answer. In January 2023, adults sometimes supplied answers or moved conversations on too quickly. Giving children room to finish their thinking is an important point to explore during a visit.
  • Funding and attendance. The opening window spans the working day, while the funding detail dates to January 2023. Ask which booking arrangements and funded entitlements would fit your child's attendance, and request a current written quotation.

The Verdict

Sunshine Corner Nursery suits families seeking care across the year within a weekday opening window. Its January 2023 account combines hands-on investigation, gardening and practical communication with parents. The Good judgement provides a useful starting point, balanced by specific questions about teaching sequence and the space children receive to express their ideas.
