A restored 17th Century schoolhouse gives Burrough Green Playgroup its character, with a large home corner indoors and an outdoor play area in the grounds of Burrough Green Primary School. This is preschool provision for children aged two to five, with capacity for 19 children in total. The building and play spaces give families concrete reasons to look beyond the playgroup’s small overall size.
Ofsted rated the playgroup Good at its September 2021 inspection, while identifying missed opportunities to stretch children’s thinking. That dated judgement provides a useful starting point, but the teaching recommendation deserves attention alongside the positive findings.
Water play, construction, sand and table-top activities give children several ways to explore, while the large home corner creates space for pretend play. The outdoor play area adds another setting for activity. These are useful practical contrasts: children can build, experiment with materials or act out familiar experiences rather than depend on one kind of play.
The early years foundation stage is the framework for learning, development and care, bringing children’s communication, physical development and learning through play into their daily experiences. In September 2021, staff used observations of children’s development to plan activities, although some opportunities to take their thinking further were missed. The improvement point concerned what adults did with learning opportunities, rather than a shortage of activities.
During September 2021, movement sessions prompted enthusiastic participation, and children sustained their attention while covering their hands with paint for printing. Outside, they rode tricycles, moved toys in pull-along carts and stacked small tyres with adult support. These examples show the different demands within the day: careful concentration at a painting activity, movement outdoors and supported experimentation with building.
Language also received attention in September 2021. Adults introduced vocabulary during activities, listened to children’s ideas and gently modelled pronunciation. Pretend cake-making with play dough gave children a reason to use words connected with ingredients. Conversation was connected to what children were doing, making language part of play rather than a separate exercise.
At the September 2021 inspection, Ofsted judged safeguarding effective and found positive experiences for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, with additional funding planned to support vulnerable children’s progress. These findings belong to that inspection date.
In September 2021, children sought adults’ help with coats and wellington boots and chatted about their families over lunch. Staff helped children express frustration verbally and approached disagreements calmly. Sand timers made turns visible, giving children a practical cue for sharing resources rather than relying only on adult reminders.
Communication extended beyond the playgroup day in September 2021. Staff shared photographs, observations and daily information through a software programme. For parents, that offered a way to understand activities and development beyond what a young child could recount at home.
The address is Burrough Green Endowed C Of E Primary School, Bradley Road, Burrough Green, Newmarket, CB8 9NH. Opening hours are 8.45am to 3.15pm, Monday to Friday, during term time; the playgroup closes for school holidays. The holiday closure is a significant planning consideration for families whose work continues throughout the year.
In September 2021, the playgroup offered funded early education places for two-, three- and four-year-olds. This is a dated account of its funding provision.
The playgroup describes strong links with Burrough Green school and occupies a schoolhouse within the primary school’s grounds. That connection does not guarantee a Reception place: families still apply through the local authority admissions process. A familiar school setting and a school admission decision are separate matters.
Burrough Green Playgroup suits families seeking term-time preschool provision for a child aged two to five, with a schoolhouse setting, indoor pretend play and outdoor space. Its September 2021 picture combines attentive communication and practical support for sharing with a clear teaching improvement point. The strongest reasons to consider it are tangible: the play spaces, the school setting and the examples of adults helping children communicate. Families should weigh those against the dated inspection findings and the school-holiday closure.
Ofsted rated it Good at the inspection on 28 September 2021. The improvement recommendation was to strengthen teaching so that staff extended children’s thinking and learning more consistently.
