Somercotes Stars Pre-School

At a Glance

Stars earned for kindness, children preparing breakfast and seeds sprouting outdoors give Somercotes Stars Pre-School a recognisable character in its May 2023 account. At its 15 May 2023 inspection, Ofsted graded it Good and judged safeguarding effective.

Based at North Somercotes C of E School in Louth, the pre-school has capacity for 30 children and accepts ages 12 to 59 months. It opens during term time, Monday to Friday, from 8am to 5.30pm, closing for school holidays.

The Nursery Experience

In May 2023, Rainbow Rules linked earning stars to considerate actions, including sharing and helping to tidy. This gave children concrete examples of how their behaviour affected others. Group affirmations also encouraged children to talk about their feelings.

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care. In May 2023, topic activities brought learning into play: a fire-engine collage gave younger children practice naming shapes while older children considered their sides. Staff introduced vocabulary about ambulance crews that children then used in their play.

Outdoors that May, children examined newly sprouting seeds and climbed a tree with adults close by. An encounter with a bee prompted them to draw on what they already knew about insects and stings. These were opportunities to connect knowledge with direct experience.

Care and Support

At the May 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that staff adapted learning for children with emerging special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), but specialist referrals needed to happen sooner and younger children needed quicker, more consistent help when their attention drifted.

In May 2023, breakfast involved choosing food, cutting and spreading, then washing and drying dishes. Everyday care became a chance to practise independence. Staff also helped children recognise emotions and express how they felt, making emotional development part of group activity.

Practical Information

The address is North Somercotes C of E School, School Lane, North Somercotes, Louth, LN11 7QB. Term-time attendance and school-holiday closures are important practical boundaries for working families.

In May 2023, session times ran from 8am to 6pm, and the pre-school provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. Those arrangements describe that inspection period.

Things to Consider

  • Support for younger children. The May 2023 finding concerned delays in helping less independent children sustain their play. During a visit, ask how practitioners respond when a child moves repeatedly between activities.
  • Specialist support. Faster SEND referrals were another May 2023 improvement priority. Ask how emerging needs lead to referral and targeted help.
  • Holiday cover. The pre-school closes during school holidays. Families needing care throughout the year will need to plan around that pattern.

The Verdict

Somercotes Stars suits families seeking term-time care with an emphasis on social behaviour and practical independence. Its May 2023 examples give substance to that emphasis: Rainbow Rules connected kindness with recognition, while breakfast gave children real tasks. The two improvement priorities deserve attention, especially for younger children and those needing specialist support.
