Nafferton Under Fives

At a Glance

Creative play and growing vegetables gave Nafferton Under Fives its character in July 2021. Children followed their interests, played cooperatively and learned how to care for plants. At its July 2021 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good overall and found safeguarding effective.

Based at Nafferton Recreation Ground, Eastlands, Nafferton, YO25 4LA, the nursery has 39 places in total. Children attending in July 2021 were aged two to four; that age range describes attendance at the time.

The Nursery Experience

In July 2021, the early years foundation stage took practical shape through imaginative activities, conversation and increasing independence. Children explored dinosaurs in sand, drew them in chalk and compared their pictures with a book. This connected sensory exploration with drawing and discussion around an interest they already enjoyed.

The outdoor area also carried learning. In July 2021, children grew sunflowers and vegetables, watered flowers during play and understood that plants needed water and sunlight. Resources gave children choices, while staff used assessments and individual interests to plan their next learning steps.

Preparation for writing began with activities exercising fingers and coordinating hands and eyes. However, everyday routines were not consistently used to develop mathematical understanding, an important limitation alongside the more purposeful planned activities.

Care and Support

In July 2021, children had close relationships with staff and received reassurance when settling was difficult. They practised taking turns through memory games, followed familiar routines and poured drinks for themselves. Handwashing and conversations about sugar and teeth connected independence with healthy habits.

Staff worked with parents to seek further advice when children needed support, including speech and language activities while professional help was awaited. Pandemic-related difficulties with language and relationships prompted additional opportunities for conversation about animals familiar to the children.

Management provided supervision and observed teaching to identify training needs. Communication with families needed more precision: some parents were unsure about their child's activities and next learning steps during pandemic restrictions. Staff also exchanged information with other settings and helped children prepare for school through conversations about teachers and unfamiliar surroundings when visits were not possible.

Practical Information

In July 2021, opening hours were 8am to 3pm, Monday to Friday, with Tuesday opening extended until 5pm. The nursery operated during term time. These are historical opening arrangements, rather than a current booking timetable.

At that time, the setting received early education funding for children aged two, three and four.

Things to Consider

  • Learning at home. In July 2021, families needed clearer information about individual next steps and ways to support learning at home. This matters for connecting nursery activities with family life.
  • Everyday mathematics. The July 2021 improvement priority included making better use of routines to develop mathematical understanding. Planned activities were more purposeful than these incidental opportunities.
  • Attendance fit. The July 2021 arrangements were term-time opening with a later finish on Tuesdays. What ages and attendance patterns can families book now?

The Verdict

Nafferton Under Fives merits consideration by parents who value creative exploration, outdoor growing and practical independence. Its July 2021 account gives concrete examples of each. The balance includes two clear improvement priorities: more useful learning information for parents and stronger mathematics within daily routines.
