Crates and tyres became cars and an aeroplane at Pollington Balne Preschool in April 2023, with children working out together how their creations would work. That practical, collaborative play gives a useful picture of its inspection-era character. The preschool has 44 places in total and is based at Pollington Balne C of E School in Pollington, Goole.
At its April 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the preschool Good, found safeguarding effective and described targeted support for children with special educational needs and disabilities, alongside a curriculum that helped children progress. Two improvements mattered: more consistent staff interactions and clearer information for parents about everyday care.
In April 2023, children could choose their activities and whether to play indoors or outside, rather than immediately joining a whole-group activity. Self-registration introduced letters and the meaning of print through children's own names. These were practical ways to combine independence with early literacy.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care; here, the April 2023 examples included learning through play, conversation and books. Water and ice prompted exploration of melting, while toy whales led into a book about those animals. Physical exploration and reading connected around the same interest.
Makaton was used in April 2023 alongside gestures to help children understand communication. A book-of-the-week approach involved returning to a story and discussing it repeatedly, giving children opportunities to hear and use unfamiliar vocabulary. Outdoors, building vehicles required children to share ideas and agree roles, making cooperation part of the activity itself.
In April 2023, assessments and observations helped staff identify children's next learning steps and barriers to learning. The special educational needs coordinator worked with families and practitioners on individual support. Parents could also access an online learning record, providing a connection between learning at preschool and at home.
Daily communication was less complete. In April 2023, parents received less information about care, routines and everyday events than about learning. Staff interactions also varied: opportunities to develop children's thinking through questions were sometimes missed, as were chances to strengthen relationships and learning during nappy changes. These are useful distinctions for parents evaluating both educational experiences and ordinary care.
The address is Pollington Balne C of E School, Pollington, Goole, DN14 0DZ. Capacity is 44 children overall, rather than a measure of the size of any individual group.
In April 2023, children attending were aged 1 to 11. The preschool operated Monday to Friday throughout the year apart from bank holidays, with session times of 7.15am to 6pm. At that date it provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. These are dated attendance arrangements, rather than a current booking offer.
Pollington Balne Preschool merits consideration by families who value practical play, language development and an individual approach to learning needs. Its April 2023 examples give substance to those priorities, while the weaknesses in staff interactions and daily communication deserve equal attention. The strongest decision will weigh those educational interests alongside the family's attendance needs.
Ofsted rated it Good at the inspection on 25 April 2023. Improvements were required in the consistency of staff interactions and information shared with parents about daily care.
