Trinity Nursery

At a Glance

Herbs for the mud kitchen, vegetables grown for snack and a pretend campfire give Trinity Nursery’s inspection-era picture its character. This High Street setting in Lowestoft has capacity for 24 children. Its May 2023 assessment provides the detail behind that small scale.

At its May 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the provision Good and judged safeguarding effective. Children then attending were aged two to four. The strengths were practical: conversation woven into play, gardening and opportunities to explore alongside other children.

The Nursery Experience

In May 2023, staff used observations and children’s interests to shape the following week’s activities. Books with flaps prompted enthusiastic participation, while songs were chosen by the children themselves. Staff introduced vocabulary during play and brought mathematical language into discussions about size, including a giraffe’s height. Learning connected with what children were already doing.

The early years foundation stage is the required framework for learning, development and care; here, the May 2023 examples included language, imaginative play and physical exploration. A pretend campfire became a setting for make-believe cooking. Outside, children watched water paintings evaporate from concrete and followed a worm’s movement into soil.

The garden added another practical thread in May 2023. Children used its herbs in the mud kitchen and grew fruit and vegetables that later became snack food. A bench allowed children to look beyond the fence, with children reminding one another about safety boundaries. These experiences brought growing, observation and manageable risk into the day.

Care and Support

At the May 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities received effective support, with staff, parents and other professionals working together on individual strategies that helped children progress.

In May 2023, communication included regular parents’ evenings, and arrangements supported the move to school. Visits from police, the fire service and people from a local residential home introduced children to lives beyond the setting. Toothbrushing after snack gave personal care a practical place in the routine.

Independence was the development point. In May 2023, children chose their play and recorded their own attendance, but staff sometimes missed chances to let them tackle more tasks themselves.

  • Term-time attendance. The May 2023 pattern centred on morning sessions, with Wednesday finishing earlier. What are the current session choices and funded attendance arrangements?

The Verdict

Its then term-time morning pattern is the practical reference point. The positive assessment sits alongside a clear improvement priority: giving children more responsibility for everyday tasks.
