Play that children can change for themselves gives Little Drummers Pre-School its character: blocks need not become towers, and painting need not involve a brush. Based at Drummond Community Centre in Hedge End, it accepts children from age two and has 30 places in total. The emphasis is on exploration rather than prescribing a single way to complete an activity.
Ofsted rated the pre-school Good on 16 July 2024. Relationships, independence and children's willingness to try activities were strengths of that visit; giving children enough time to answer and develop their language was the improvement priority. This is a parent-committee-managed setting, with opportunities for families to contribute to its organisation as well as their own child's learning.
Attendance is term-time, with a choice of drop-off and collection times across the working week.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for children's learning and care, covering communication, physical development, relationships and the other areas of early learning. Here, play provides the route into those areas: children can experiment with materials, ask questions and explore how things work. The framework is the foundation; the practical character comes from allowing children to use resources in their own ways.
Observation also shapes what happens next. Each child has a learning journey, and staff use what they notice to plan activities around individual needs. That connects children's interests with the next steps in their learning, rather than treating the same activity as the right answer for everyone.
In July 2024, children practised new skills with a balance bike and an easel. They persisted when something did not work straight away and took pleasure in mastering it. These are useful examples of the day in action: physical coordination and creative expression sit alongside opportunities to try again.
Conversation needs more consistent space. In July 2024, children had opportunities to talk about home and their experiences, but adults sometimes supplied an answer or continued before a child had finished responding. The improvement requested was to strengthen staff practice in developing communication and extending language. For parents, the important distinction is between offering conversation and allowing a child time to contribute to it.
Small routines were part of children's participation in July 2024. Children put away their coats and placed their own drinks bottles in a box, taking responsibility for manageable tasks. Behaviour expectations were straightforward, with staff acknowledging patience, listening and waiting for a turn. Independence here included both doing things for oneself and learning how to share a day with others.
Tapestry, the electronic learning-journey system, gives parents access to observations and photographs of their child's learning. Staff add information as the journey develops, so it provides an ongoing account rather than a single end-of-term summary. Families can review it at any time, making it a practical connection between home and pre-school.
In July 2024, the key-person arrangement followed the relationships children naturally formed with staff when they started. Adults also gathered information from parents about children's interests and ways of learning, and shared updates about development, wellbeing and achievements. For a child beginning pre-school, that approach gives an existing connection with an adult a role in the settling process.
At its July 2024 inspection, Ofsted found effective safeguarding arrangements and effective support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, with a knowledgeable special educational needs coordinator and staff who understood the help individual children needed. These are dated findings about practice, rather than a guarantee about every future experience.
In July 2024, a feelings area gave children a place to explore emotions through stories and family photographs. Adults helped them understand their responses, while children showed patience towards friends needing additional support. The physical space gave emotional learning a concrete place in the day.
Health and safety also appeared in ordinary routines at that time: children learned about washing hands, moving carefully indoors and treating friends gently. These were practical habits children could practise themselves, alongside adult support.
Little Drummers opens during term time, Monday to Friday, from 9am to 3pm. Drop-off choices are 9am or 9.30am, with afternoon collection at half past two or 3pm, alongside noon and 12.30pm options. That allows families to choose an earlier collection or a longer stay within the pre-school day.
The setting's team discusses attendance arrangements with families as part of settling children into pre-school life. Its contact form, telephone and email provide enquiry routes.
The address is Drummond Community Centre, Drummond Road, Hedge End, Southampton, Hampshire, SO30 2AD. The community-centre base is part of the setting's identity, rather than a separate nursery campus.
Little Drummers accepts 2 year old funding, 30 hours funding and the 3-4 year old EYE grant. Participation in these funding schemes does not establish an individual family's eligibility or entitlement to a particular attendance arrangement.
Parent involvement also supports resources. A management committee of parents runs the pre-school, and money raised through its fundraising goes back into children's equipment and resources. Christmas Fayre and Easter Fayre are among the committee's events, giving families a way to contribute beyond their child's daily attendance.
Little Drummers suits families seeking play-led pre-school from age two, with term-time attendance that can end around lunchtime or continue into the afternoon. Tapestry and parent-committee involvement offer two different ways to participate in children's early education. The July 2024 picture combines positive relationships and practical independence with a clear communication priority: adults need to give children sufficient time to develop their own answers.
Ofsted rated it Good on 16 July 2024. The improvement priority was more consistent support for children's communication, including allowing time for responses and extending language.
