Bambini Nursery, Ewell, Epsom

At a Glance

Japanese songs and culture, parkland around Ewell Court House and classes named Kitten, Puppy, Rabbit and Teddy give Bambini a recognisable character. This Ewell nursery takes children from 3 months to 5 years and has capacity for 48 children. Its introduction to Japanese language and culture extends to all children, rather than being reserved for Japanese-speaking families.

At its May 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective. The educational strengths came with two clear improvement points: creative tasks needed more room for children's own ideas, and group activities needed adjusting to keep everyone involved. Those distinctions matter more than the grade alone.

Families can choose between Full Day Care across 51 weeks and Nursery School attendance during 38 term-time weeks, with the latter starting from age 2. That choice is a useful part of the nursery's appeal, alongside its cultural emphasis and outdoor setting.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

The classes follow a sequence through early childhood: Kitten Class takes babies from 3 months to approximately 18 months; Puppy Class runs from 18 months to around two and a half years; Rabbit Class covers roughly two and a half to three and a half years; and Teddy Class continues from three and a half to approximately 5 years.

Bright interiors, a garden for early-years play and the surrounding Ewell Court House parkland provide the physical setting. The age bands help families understand the progression through the classes, while the garden and parkland give outdoor activity a place alongside indoor play.

Learning and Activities

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the framework for learning here: children develop communication, physical skills, creativity and early literacy and mathematical understanding through play. Drawing, pretend play, rhythm, movement and early problem-solving give these areas practical expression through play. Observations of children's interests and development inform what staff plan next.

Japanese language and culture add something concrete to that foundation. Children encounter songs, origami, traditional games and hand-play activities. This gives the cultural emphasis practical expression in the nursery day, through things children can make, hear and join in with.

In May 2023, younger children experimented with marks on paper, while older children tackled puzzles, giving them different ways to practise the hand skills used later in writing. Water play introduced comparisons between quantities, and magnetic shapes allowed older children to explore how flat shapes fit together into solid forms. These were small, hands-on learning opportunities.

The limitations were equally specific in May 2023. Some craft tasks followed adults' intended results too closely, leaving less scope for children to invent their own versions. Some group sessions also continued beyond the point at which children could sustain their attention. Families who value open-ended creativity should give these points weight.

Outdoor and Community Life

The daily timetable includes outdoor exploration for both younger and older children, rather than placing it in a single age group. In May 2023, toddlers went on daily walks and talked about the birds they had encountered. Those walks gave toddlers something to talk about as well as opportunities to move.

Family events include the Christmas Show, Open Day, Sports Day and Graduation Ceremony. Parents and carers are welcome to take part. These occasions give families opportunities to share nursery life beyond the usual daily updates.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

A key person takes responsibility for each child's observations, learning plans and assessment. Settling includes trial sessions and individual introductions between staff and parents or carers, with families invited to explain their child's needs and habits. This provides a practical starting point for the relationship, rather than expecting staff to learn everything after attendance begins.

The personal Learning Journey brings together photographs and children's work, and parents can contribute to it. Daily updates sit alongside class newsletters, nursery newsletters and access to policies; formal practitioner meetings take place three times a year. Together, these provide both an immediate account of the day and a longer view of development.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

At the May 2023 inspection, Ofsted found positive relationships with key people and a planned curriculum supporting children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. That is a dated assessment of practice, rather than a promise about every child's present experience.

In May 2023, independence was practised through ordinary routines: toddlers worked on putting on shoes and feeding themselves, while preschool children helped themselves to lunch and washed their hands beforehand. The timetable also makes space for younger children's sleep and older children's quieter rest. Care and learning meet in these everyday routines.

Food and baby meals are cooked in the nursery kitchen. Full Day Care includes a light evening meal in its daily pattern, with breakfast and lunch also offered as options.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. Full Day Care runs across 51 weeks, while Nursery School is a 38-week, term-time pattern for children aged 2 and over; the daily timetable gives their finishing times as 6pm and 2pm respectively. Public bank holidays and a week around Christmas and New Year are closure periods.

Enquiries and visit arrangements can be made by telephone or email, and a personalised showaround forms part of the parent introduction. The choice between the two attendance schemes is the central practical distinction: one extends across most of the year, while the other follows term time.

Getting There

The address is Ewell Court House, Lakehurst Road, Ewell, Surrey KT19 0EB, with parking at the site. Buses 418 and 406 connect Epsom and Kingston; the stated rail access is 15 mins walk from BR Stoneleigh Station.

Funding and Paid Extras

In May 2023, the nursery received early-education funding for children aged two, three and four. The two payment schemes also provide a route to paid childcare, and current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.

Things to Consider

  • Creative freedom and group activities. In May 2023, adult direction limited some craft work and some group sessions outlasted children's attention. On a visit, ask how staff now leave room for children's ideas and adjust activities for different attention spans.
  • Choosing the attendance scheme. Nursery School starts from age 2 and follows 38 term-time weeks, finishing at 2pm; Full Day Care covers 51 weeks and finishes at 6pm. Consider which calendar and finish time fit family routines.
  • Funding and the complete quotation. Early-education funding was part of the offer in May 2023. Ask which funded arrangements apply to your intended attendance and how meals and consumables are treated in the quotation.

The Verdict

Bambini suits families drawn to Japanese language and cultural activities, a parkland setting and regular involvement in their child's learning. Its attendance choices serve both families seeking care across most of the year and those wanting a shorter, term-time Nursery School pattern from age 2.

The May 2023 educational picture contained useful everyday detail, from water-based mathematical exploration to children practising independence at lunch. The qualifications are clear too: children's creative choices and engagement during group activities needed attention. Those are sensible points to explore alongside the nursery's cultural and practical appeal.
