A driving track with a zebra crossing and weekly woodland sessions give Little Oaks Nursery Selsted a clear outdoor character. The garden combines imaginative play with opportunities to climb, dig and explore, while nearby countryside extends the setting beyond its own play space. This is a nursery for children aged two to five, with capacity for 24 children in total.
At its 5 May 2022 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective. That judgement provides a dated assessment of the provision, rather than a description of everything happening today. The outdoor offer is the strongest thread connecting the current nursery day with the activities observed that May.
Adventurers and Investigators are the named nursery age groups. Flexible sessions sit alongside Discovery Club, the after-school and holiday provision for school-aged children.
Adventurers covers children aged two to three, while Investigators is for those aged three to five. These age bands give parents a straightforward starting point for understanding where their child fits, rather than treating the whole two-to-five span as one undifferentiated stage.
The setting has been refurbished and equipped with additional toys and learning materials. Its physical character comes through most clearly outdoors: the driving track supports road-safety play, while a slide, climbing wall and digging area offer different ways to move and investigate. Children can switch between pretending, physical activity and exploring materials within the garden.
The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the framework for learning and care, with play used to develop children's skills and understanding. At Selsted, sensory exploration, messy play and wood work give that framework concrete expression. The useful distinction is the activity itself: children have materials to handle and things to investigate, rather than learning being confined to adult-led instruction.
In May 2022, children used magnifying glasses to investigate soil creatures and adapted resources for superhero games. Letter-sound activities connected language with familiar objects and nature. These examples show how an interest could become an opportunity to practise observation, conversation or imaginative thinking.
The same dated account identified two teaching weaknesses: large-group activities did not consistently hold children's attention, and older children were not always given enough additional challenge. Both matter for parents weighing the preschool stage. Enjoyable activities and appropriate progression need to work together.
Weekly woodland sessions take children into nearby ancient woodland. Forest school sessions and wood working also form part of the outdoor offer, giving families who value practical activity a clear reason to consider Selsted. The countryside is part of the setting's character, with sheep and horses sometimes visible in neighbouring fields.
In May 2022, outings included woods, a farm shop and a garden centre. Children selected seeds and plants for the nursery garden, then compared their shapes and sizes during planting. Water play involved guttering, containers and a wheelbarrow, turning the garden into a place to experiment with moving water. These are inspection-era examples, but they help explain the outdoor emphasis through recognisable tasks rather than broad claims about nature.
In May 2022, settling arrangements supported children as they started nursery, and staff maintained contact with parents through meetings, online updates and newsletters. Staff also shared ideas for learning at home. For a parent, that combination connects the settling period with ongoing communication: support did not end once a child had become familiar with the setting.
At the May 2022 inspection, Ofsted found that work with other professionals and additional funding supported children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, including staff sign-language training and targeted communication activities. The practical mechanism matters here: support involved adapting adult skills and activities to children's communication needs, rather than relying only on a general statement about inclusion.
The current team structure emphasises close relationships with children. In May 2022, staff offered comfort when children needed it and encouraged manageable physical challenges, including climbing and balancing. Those dated examples illustrate both sides of care: reassurance when a child needs help, and opportunities to attempt something independently.
The nursery is based at Selsted Community Hall, Wootton Lane, Selsted, Dover, CT15 7HH. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, and nursery attendance is term-time, with school-holiday closures. The opening window is useful for planning a working day; flexible sessions describe the attendance arrangement.
Discovery Club provides after-school and holiday care for school-aged children. It is a separate consideration from the nursery's two-to-five age range, especially for families thinking about childcare for siblings at different stages.
A large car park supports collection and drop-off. For families using a car, having parking at the setting is a practical part of the community-hall location.
Funded childcare of up to 30 hours is offered through flexible sessions. This is an offer of funded provision, rather than a guarantee that a particular child qualifies or that every requested attendance pattern can be funded. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.

Its attendance offer serves flexible nursery sessions as well as after-school provision through Discovery Club, so its appeal reaches beyond one daily booking pattern.
The Good judgement from May 2022 is useful context, with specific improvement points around group engagement and challenge for older children.
