Books carried home for bedtime and a daily mile on the playground give Parkend Nursery's July 2022 account a recognisable character: stories, movement and family involvement mattered in children's day. These were practical experiences, with learning extending beyond organised activities.
Parkend Nursery serves children aged two to five on Yorkley Road in Parkend, Lydney. At its July 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the provision Good overall, with Outstanding personal development. That judgement provides a positive foundation, alongside two clear priorities concerning language teaching and uninterrupted play.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care, bringing play and everyday experiences into their education. In July 2022, recipe books in the home corner connected stories with pretend cooking. Books had a purpose within play, rather than being confined to story time.
The book sharing scheme also linked nursery learning with home: children borrowed a book to enjoy with their family at bedtime over a week. That gave parents a concrete way to join in. Meanwhile, the daily mile used the playground for movement, with children practising safe behaviour on the steps and using the handrail.
In July 2022, gatherings outside the nursery brought children together with families and staff's families. These encounters gave children opportunities to explore differences between people and their own identity. The balance of the day needed attention, however: adult-directed activities sometimes interrupted children's opportunities to pursue play for longer.
At the July 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and children with special educational needs and/or disabilities making good progress, supported by additional staff and work with outside professionals. This linked support to children's individual needs.
In July 2022, children turned to staff for comfort when upset or tired, while families received regular updates about learning and next steps. Visits from a local dentist connected oral-health activities with help for families to arrange dental checks. Care included practical support beyond the nursery day.
Language teaching was less consistent. In July 2022, an intervention lead demonstrated ways to develop early communication, but some staff introduced ideas that younger children were not ready to understand.
