Sheep and lambs brought in by local farmers give St Johns Playgroup a recognisable character: everyday learning with a connection to the world beyond the playroom. In December 2024, these visits enriched children's experiences alongside singing, imaginative construction and garden play.
At its December 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the playgroup Good, judged safeguarding effective and found that personalised support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities worked effectively. The setting has capacity for 29 children at St. Johns Cricket Club in Cinderford; children attending in December 2024 were aged two to four.
In December 2024, the day began with a song combining movement and feelings. Preparations for the Christmas concert gave children opportunities to sing, while tapping out rhythms helped older children explore the sounds of words. Visual prompts supported younger children's communication.
The early years foundation stage provides the framework for learning, development and care: here, the December 2024 examples included conversation, movement and learning through play. In the garden, children climbed steps, rode wheeled vehicles and played hide-and-seek, combining physical practice with taking turns. Filling stockings with small objects gave younger children practice coordinating their hands and eyes.
Large cardboard boxes became building materials in December 2024. Children stacked them into towers, shared turns and tried again when structures collapsed. There was a clear opportunity to take this further: adults sometimes missed chances to deepen older children's reasoning and problem-solving.
In December 2024, staff used information gathered from families before children started to understand their existing skills and plan subsequent learning. Children received recognition for achievements at home, connecting family life with their experiences at playgroup.
Personalised plans incorporated strategies from other professionals in December 2024, and additional funding supported children with SEND. Everyday independence also received attention: children managed their coats, bags and lunch boxes, while feeling able to request help. Staff encouraged considerate behaviour and children responded with kindness towards their friends.
