The Forest of Dean Children's Opportunity Centre

At a Glance

Outdoor storytelling and individual support give this Coleford centre its character: in February 2023, children followed an owl story in the nature area, then made dough owls with buttons. Stories became something children could take part in and recreate.

At its February 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the centre Good overall, while finding uneven teaching interactions and delays in addressing those differences. The centre has capacity for 55 children; the children attending in February 2023 were aged 0 to 4.

The Nursery Experience

In February 2023, the early years foundation stage provided the required framework for children's learning, development and care, with storytelling, physical play and communication woven into activities. Staff adapted learning to what children already knew and followed their interests.

The outdoor space supplied concrete opportunities to explore. In February 2023, children climbed banks and moved between large rocks, practising movement and manageable risks. When wind caught streamers, staff added fabric to a climbing frame so children could watch and feel its movement. An everyday change in the weather became an investigation.

Older children responded positively to their room leader. Younger children's group activities were less settled: in February 2023, toys remained around them during group time, creating distractions. Clearer, more consistent expectations for younger children were an improvement priority.

Care and Support

At the February 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) received exceptionally effective support through collaboration with families and external agencies, and that safeguarding arrangements were effective.

In February 2023, staff helped children with limited speech by matching their communication, including copying actions and repeating sounds. This gave children ways to connect beyond spoken words. Children also discussed differences in learning needs and physical abilities, helping them understand one another.

A family support worker liaised with families in February 2023, alongside early help and suggestions for extending learning at home. Mealtimes brought adults and children together for conversation, while opening packets and lunch boxes gave children opportunities to practise independence.

Practical Information

Bowens Hill Road, Coleford, GL16 8DU is the centre's address. In February 2023, it operated within a local school's grounds and opened Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, throughout the year apart from bank holidays and the Christmas period.

In February 2023, the centre received early education funding for children aged two, three and four. Attendance at the centre does not guarantee a Reception place.

Things to Consider

  • Younger children's group time. In February 2023, distractions and inconsistent behaviour expectations affected these activities. On a visit, ask how staff now organise group time for younger children.
  • Teaching consistency. Further staff development was a February 2023 improvement priority, and leaders had been slow to address differences in teaching. Ask what has changed in staff development and everyday interactions.
  • Individual communication support. In February 2023, staff used actions and sounds to connect with children with limited speech. Discuss how this approach would fit your child's communication needs.

The Verdict

The centre suits families seeking individual communication support and outdoor learning: February 2023 examples included responsive communication work, storytelling and exploration of wind. The same assessment raised questions about consistency for younger children and the pace of staff development. Those are useful priorities for a visit.
