A spoon, a jug and a pair of shoes tell much of Highfield’s story: in July 2024, babies practised feeding themselves, while older children served food, poured drinks and learnt to dress for outdoors. Independence began with ordinary tasks. For parents, that gives school preparation a practical meaning beyond early counting and mark-making.
Spring Nursery Highfield has 36 places in total for children aged 3 to 60 months, on Whinfield Way in Rowlands Gill. At its 10 July 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated it Good overall and found safeguarding effective.
The early years foundation stage sets expectations for children’s learning, development and care: here, its inspection-era examples included learning through play, conversation and everyday self-care. In July 2024, communication received sustained attention, with staff repeating vocabulary during play and introducing younger children to words describing size.
Experiments gave older children something concrete to discuss. In July 2024, mixing vinegar with bicarbonate of soda prompted predictions and conversation about the resulting bubbles; counting spoonfuls brought mathematics into the same activity. Younger children encountered counting as staff handled pieces of broken ice. These were examples of learning built into an experience rather than isolated exercises.
Outdoor play also involved thinking. In July 2024, children older than two could decide when to go outside, and a water tray, jug and ramp became a problem to solve: how much water would move a toy boat? Choice and investigation worked together. However, opportunities to explore the surrounding community needed development, an important qualification for families who value outings alongside nursery-based outdoor play.
At the July 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that additional funding supported children’s needs through individual help where necessary, alongside staff training to strengthen support for talking and understanding language. That finding gives parents a concrete example of how extra resources were used.
Communication with families had several routes in July 2024. Parents received daily app updates and weekly accounts of activities, could contribute observations from home, and discussed progress and ways to extend learning. Questionnaires also influenced practice. The useful point is the two-way exchange: parents contributed knowledge about their child rather than simply receiving updates.
In July 2024, staff had also undertaken training after identifying a need to strengthen fine motor development. They applied early mark-making strategies inside and outdoors. Preparation for school included managing shoes and coats, serving food and learning to share, connecting practical independence with consideration for other children.
The address is Whinfield Way, Rowlands Gill, NE39 1EH. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with closures for bank holidays and one week at Christmas. That opening window matters for families arranging care around work; the Christmas closure needs a separate plan.
In July 2024, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. This is a dated account of provision, rather than a promise about an individual family’s entitlement or attendance arrangement.
Highfield merits consideration for families seeking weekday care and an emphasis on practical independence. Its July 2024 examples made that emphasis tangible, from self-feeding to experiments and outdoor problem-solving. Parent communication and targeted language support added substance to the account. For families placing a high value on community outings, the local-exploration improvement point deserves attention during a visit.
