Sunflowers, bean roots and conversations about emergency services give a concrete picture of childhood at Busy Bees Guildford in July 2023: learning grew from things children could handle, observe and discuss. The setting on Gill Avenue accepts children aged 3 to 60 months and has 77 places in total. That is whole-nursery capacity, rather than the size of any child's group.
At its 26 July 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good, found effective safeguarding arrangements and positive support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities and children learning English as an additional language. Two improvements concerned the pace of adult conversation and the organisation of younger children's meals. Later regulatory findings also matter to the assessment below.
Morning and afternoon attendance options sit alongside full-time childcare, giving families different ways to organise their week.
The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care. For parents, that means education includes communication, play and everyday independence, rather than being confined to formal activities.
In July 2023, activities were planned around children's interests and stages of development. Preschool children explored plant growth by tending sunflowers and examining the roots of beans. The sequence connected something familiar with a closer investigation: growing a plant became an opportunity to consider what happens beneath it.
Conversation also drew on children's experiences. Preschool children discussed firefighters and paramedics, connecting those roles with a hospital visit. This gave their talk a concrete subject and a reason to explain what they knew. Games and shared use of a see-saw provided occasions to practise taking turns and cooperating.
For toddlers in July 2023, stories in small groups supported time spent listening together. Adults encouraged them to express requests for help in words. Babies practised everyday care, including replacing sun hats and washing their hands with adult demonstration. These were small, practical steps towards doing more for themselves.
The qualification to this account is significant. Sometimes adults moved to another question or instruction before a child had time to answer. Explanations about the effects of children's actions could also be unclear. An interesting activity needs an adult who leaves room for the child's response.
In July 2023, staff knew the children assigned to them and used that knowledge when planning activities. Children formed close relationships with adults and settled into care readily. Familiar daily routines helped babies recognise mealtimes, while demonstrations made handwashing something they could participate in.
A special educational needs coordinator worked with families and staff in July 2023. That role provided a mechanism for discussing individual learning needs. Parent communication included unhurried feedback about children's activities, giving families a way to connect nursery experiences with life at home.
Younger children's meals needed better organisation in July 2023: some became distracted, while others needed more help serving food. This matters beyond what is on the plate. Mealtimes require adults to coordinate practical assistance with children's developing independence.
Ofsted's February and July 2024 compliance outcomes recorded repeated failures concerning notification of events potentially affecting staff suitability, with the February outcome recording recruitment monitoring already in place and the July outcome recording updated reporting policies. The February outcome confirmed that the safeguarding and welfare actions had been met; the July outcome recorded action to correct the late notification. These dated findings deserve consideration alongside the earlier Good judgement.

Funding options include 30 Hours working families funding, 15 Hours universal funding for children aged 3 and 4, and 15 hours for 2-year-olds receiving support. Eligibility determines which option applies to a family. The practical decision is how the chosen attendance pattern and funded entitlement fit together, rather than treating a funding label as a complete childcare package.
Busy Bees Guildford suits families considering morning or afternoon attendance as well as full-time childcare, with a weekday opening window that extends into the evening. The July 2023 examples give substance to its learning: plant investigations, purposeful conversation and small steps towards independence.
The decision also needs scrutiny of adult interaction, younger children's mealtimes and the repeated notification findings from 2024. The strongest choice will rest on how those practical responsibilities work for the child and attendance pattern a family has in mind.
Ofsted judged it Good on 26 July 2023. Improvement points concerned giving children time to respond, explaining consequences and organising younger children's mealtimes.
