In June 2023, a large natural garden and the Wall of Wonder gave Happy Days Pre-School its character: outdoor exploration alongside children adding a brick to recognise their achievements. At its June 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the setting Good and judged safeguarding effective. Those findings provide a dated assessment, rather than a description of today's daily practice.
Happy Days operates at Primrose Hall in Church View, Ash, with capacity for 20 children. In June 2023, the children attending were aged 2 to 4. Its present emphasis is play and exploration, with support from Surrey early years and Childcare Service and membership of the Pre-school learning Alliance.
In June 2023, children could choose between indoor activities and outdoor play, spending much of their time in the natural garden. A slide and swing supported physical activity; magnifying glasses helped children examine insects and count their legs. These were concrete opportunities to connect movement, observation and number, rather than treating outdoor time simply as a break from learning.
Dinosaurs and minibeasts supplied starting points for activities that developed communication, independence and mathematics. Staff used repetition to help children hear how words were pronounced, and conversations extended the play. The distinction matters: children's interests gave adults something meaningful to build on.
The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care. In parent terms, that brings learning and everyday care together: play, communication and growing independence belong within the same day. Happy Days' play-and-exploration emphasis fits within that framework.
The Wall of Wonder made achievement visible in June 2023, with children adding a brick to recognise something they had accomplished. Peeling a satsuma was one example: staff encouraged children to attempt it themselves, offering guidance as they tried. Recognition extended to small successes, giving children a reason to persist with unfamiliar tasks.
There were also clear teaching priorities. In June 2023, adults sometimes guided play too closely instead of extending imagination, creative thinking and problem-solving. Opportunities to develop mark making were inconsistent, leaving some children less confident about expressing themselves on paper. These are useful points for families to explore because enjoying activities and being stretched by them are different things.
At the June 2023 inspection, Ofsted identified children's progress, especially for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, as a strength, supported by coordination between the SENCo, parents, key persons and other professionals. Support also addressed the needs of children receiving additional funding. This gives the inclusion judgement a concrete basis: adults worked together around individual children.
In June 2023, children who needed help separating from their parents received extra comfort and attention. Everyday independence was encouraged too. Children practised pouring drinks, helped deal with spills and put away their snack utensils. These small routines gave them responsibilities they could attempt themselves.
Families also contributed to children's understanding of different lives and backgrounds by sharing their experiences with the group. In June 2023, this sat alongside celebrations and discussions about similarities and differences, providing a practical route into respectful attitudes.
Current staff arrangements include a designated safeguarding lead, a deputy safeguarding role and a special educational needs coordinator. Staff undertake child-protection training, attend childcare workshops and hold first-aid training. Surrey early years and Childcare Service provides advisory visits covering individual needs, child development and staff training, giving the team an additional source of practical support.
The address is Primrose Hall, Church View, Ash, Aldershot GU12 6RT. Opening hours are 8am to 2.15pm, Monday to Friday. These are the operating hours; families should distinguish them from the attendance arrangement they agree with the setting.
In June 2023, Happy Days operated during term time. That dated calendar is relevant for parents considering how preschool fits around work and school holidays.
FEET funding is accepted, and 30 free funded hours are offered subject to eligibility criteria. Parents supply lunch when their child stays beyond 12.15pm, including during funded attendance. That makes lunch preparation part of the family's routine rather than a meal prepared by the setting.
Happy Days suits families drawn to play and exploration in a hall-based preschool, with an early-afternoon finish and parent-supplied lunch for children staying later. The garden, practical independence and Wall of Wonder give its June 2023 daily life recognisable character.
The Good judgement and positive inclusion finding carry weight, while the teaching priorities deserve equal attention. For a family choosing this setting, the useful question is how today's practice combines children's freedom to explore with adult support that stretches their thinking and confidence on paper.
