A mud kitchen, pretend medical play and babies copying signs give Little Rainbows a concrete early-years character. Those examples come from March 2023, rather than a description of today’s daily routine. The current age range is three to 60 months, at Bitteswell Road in Lutterworth.
At its 30 March 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective. The strongest detail concerns relationships and children’s play, with important reservations about how staff supported children’s chosen activities.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children’s learning, development and care: here, the March 2023 examples included imaginative play, communication and physical exploration. Children used a pretend doctor’s surgery, with adults helping them think about the resources their game needed.
In March 2023, preschool children handled scoops in the mud kitchen, two-year-olds practised balance on an obstacle course, and babies moved around furniture and climbed low steps towards a slide. Singing also gave babies opportunities to imitate actions and signs. These were practical experiences, using movement and conversation rather than relying on adult explanation alone.
There was a limitation. In March 2023, adults sometimes pursued their own learning intentions instead of responding to children’s interests. Play space could become crowded, reducing the attention children received during activities they had chosen. Better use of that space and more responsive adult involvement were improvement priorities.
At the March 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that children with special educational needs received strong support through individualised activities and collaboration with parents and outside agencies. That gives families a specific account of how support worked at that time, rather than a general promise of inclusion.
In March 2023, staff recognised babies’ hunger and tiredness and offered physical comfort. Toddlers consoled upset friends, while preschool children used sand timers to manage turns with equipment. Everyday care and social learning were closely connected.
Staff supervision in March 2023 included discussion of children and training needs. However, training was not sufficiently directed towards individual weaknesses in teaching practice. Improving that targeting was another recommendation.
The address is Bitteswell Road, Lutterworth, LE17 4EW. The current age range extends from three to 60 months.
In March 2023, the setting operated on weekdays across 47 weeks, with session times running from 7.30am until 6pm. It also provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four at that time. These are dated operating details, rather than current booking terms.
Little Rainbows merits consideration by families seeking care from infancy through the preschool years who value practical play and individual support. The March 2023 account contains useful examples of both. Its reservations matter too: responsive teaching and the organisation of play space deserve attention alongside the Good judgement.
