Bright Horizons Church Crookham Day Nursery and Preschool

At a Glance

A garden with sheltered play zones, a baby room organised around home routines and music through Boogie Mites give Church Crookham a recognisable character. Outdoor play has substance here: children can move between indoors and the garden, with bug hunts, scooting and storytelling among the activities. That matters for families who want movement and exploration built into the day.

Bright Horizons Church Crookham Day Nursery and Preschool accepts children from 3 months to 5 years at Springfield House, Redfields Lane. At its January 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated it Good, judged safeguarding effective and praised support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), while requiring better organisation of staff and activities so children could take part fully.

The organisational safeguarding notice dated 22 June 2026 is material to the decision and needs to be considered alongside the January 2023 inspection.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Explorers is the baby room, with a calm setting and care that follows routines from home; continuity in feeding and rest can make the change to nursery more manageable. Children subsequently move through Discoverers, Investigators, Inventors and Graduators, with sensory exploration, relationships, independence and preparation for school shaping the progression.

The rooms are arranged for different developmental stages. For parents, the useful distinction is between babies' familiar routines and older children's increasing independence, rather than expecting the same day across the nursery.

Learning and Activities

The EYFS provides the framework for children's learning and care, with play and activities developing communication, physical abilities and early understanding. Alongside it, the group-wide Nurture Approach combines attention to wellbeing with learning in art, science, literacy and maths.

Ready for School helps preschool children develop confidence and practical skills for their move to primary school. Boogie Mites adds music and movement. Both give parents something concrete to look for when considering how older children spend their time.

In January 2023, role play included choosing a recipe and acting out mixing and cooking in a play oven. Children also explored books and resources on low shelves. These examples show how accessible materials supported children in making choices and developing their own play.

During that same month, older children practised cooperating through marble runs, artwork and making marks in sand. Babies painted while standing at tables, while toddlers shared stories and used outdoor climbing equipment. Preparation for school included concentration and managing personal tasks, giving independence a practical meaning.

Outdoor and Community Life

The garden has natural play spaces and covered areas, allowing outdoor activities in different weather. Bug hunts encourage close observation, while parachute games and scooting bring larger movements into the day. Children have free-flow access, so outdoor time can be part of their choices as well as an organised activity.

Care and Support

Home routines are central to the current baby-room offer. That is a useful starting point for families whose child already has established feeding or sleep habits: continuity forms part of the room's approach.

The Bright Horizons Family App carries photographs, daily information and observations about development. It gives parents a way to follow experiences they cannot see themselves, and to connect nursery learning with conversations at home.

In January 2023, staff gathered information from parents when children were settling and when additional needs emerged. Families could contribute through an online application, conversations and parent meetings. That exchange mattered because support depended on knowing the child beyond the nursery day.

At that time, communication support included pictures, signing through Makaton and familiar words from children's home languages. A special educational needs coordinator worked with staff. These are specific methods families can recognise, rather than a general promise about inclusion.

In June 2026, Ofsted served an organisational Welfare Requirements Notice requiring stronger safeguarding leadership, oversight, escalation of concerns and implementation across Bright Horizons settings, with actions due by 1 August 2026; the document explicitly says these organisational actions do not represent concerns identified at every individual setting. The latest published position on this organisational action is the June notice.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. Care runs across the year, with closures for an inset day, bank and public holidays, and the period between Christmas and New Year. Families needing cover during that holiday period should build those closures into their plans.

Funded childcare uses 10-hour sessions beginning when the nursery opens. Attendance beyond that funded session is charged as additional childcare, and purchasing those extra hours is not a condition of taking a funded place. The distinction matters: the opening window and the funded session are different arrangements.

Getting There

The address is Springfield House, Redfields Lane, Church Crookham, Hampshire, GU52 0RP. There is an onsite car park and buggy park, and the nursery is near the A287 and Fleet station.

The nursery telephone number is 01252 917 074. Personal tours have an online booking form.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded options include 30-hour entitlement for eligible children from 9 months and eligible two-year-olds, plus 15-hour and 30-hour options for children aged three to five. Funding is stretched across 50 weeks. Eligibility conditions apply, so the entitlement and the nursery's delivery pattern need to be considered separately.

Meals are freshly cooked by an onsite chef; meals and snacks are included in private childcare fees. Nappies, wipes, nappy cream and sun cream are also included in those fees.

For funded hours, food is charged separately, with the food charge explicitly non-mandatory and not a condition of accessing a funded place. Consumables associated with funded hours are supplied, but that wording does not establish their charge position.

A registration charge applies, and fees are collected in advance through monthly direct debit. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation, with funded hours, extra childcare and food treated separately.

Things to Consider

  • Organisational safeguarding action. The June 2026 notice required changes by 1 August 2026. On a visit, ask how Church Crookham implements the required oversight, concern escalation and staff supervision arrangements.
  • Participation in activities. In January 2023, staffing and activity organisation sometimes prevented children from getting the intended learning. Ask how today's room arrangements enable each child to join in.
  • Funded-day structure. Funding is stretched over 50 weeks and delivered in 10-hour sessions starting at opening. Compare that arrangement with your intended attendance and the separate, non-mandatory food charge.
  • Dietary needs. An onsite chef prepares meals. Families managing allergies should confirm how current dietary information reaches the people preparing and serving their child's food.

The Verdict

Church Crookham suits families seeking baby care that follows home routines, garden access and preschool preparation through Ready for School. Its attendance offer accommodates funded sessions and privately paid additional hours, with closures that need to fit family working arrangements.

The January 2023 assessment provides a positive, dated foundation, with a clear qualification about activity organisation. The June 2026 organisational safeguarding notice carries greater weight for a current decision. The practical offer is useful; understanding how those required safeguarding arrangements operate locally is essential.
