Victorian-house surroundings, an enclosed outdoor play area and computers for preschool children give Grange Road Nursery a recognisable character. At 130 Grange Road in Hartlepool, the setting combines domestic-scale surroundings with resources for children approaching school age. Original building features remain part of the setting. The practical appeal is a nursery day with space for indoor play and outdoor activity.
The nursery accepts children aged 2 to 59 months and has 56 places in total. At its March 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated it Good overall and judged safeguarding effective. That is a dated assessment, with useful detail beneath the grade: practical independence, storytelling and physical play featured alongside specific improvements needed in teaching and communication.
Full-day, half-day and term-time attendance patterns give families different ways to use the nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the framework for children's learning and care: play supports development, from communication and movement to early number skills. It is the foundation of the nursery day rather than an extra programme. Playrooms contain toys and materials suited to children's stages of development, while preschool children have access to computers and printers.
In March 2023, small movements were practised through shaping dough and lifting objects with tongs. Children also made marks using paint, pencils, chalk and sand. These are concrete ways to practise handling tools and controlling movements before writing becomes the task.
Goldilocks and The Three Bears brought several kinds of learning together in March 2023. Toddlers discussed the characters' emotions, while older children compared chair sizes. Staff introduced words for differences in size, and children used signing to help communicate. Storytelling connected discussion of feelings with comparisons of size.
Number work also appeared within play in March 2023. Children compared collections of coloured bears, and toddlers counted while putting oats into a bowl. The useful connection is between a number and something a child can handle or see. Counting had a practical context.
An enclosed outdoor play area gives outdoor activity its own space. In March 2023, children went outside daily: older children used balance bikes and a tyre wall, and children searched for carrots with small spades. Toddlers counted their star jumps during an exercise activity. These examples show how movement, number work and exploration could share the same part of the day.
The setting's Victorian-house character and retained original features are another part of its appeal. Families choosing between different nursery environments may value these surroundings alongside the equipped playrooms. The physical setting matters, but the March 2023 improvement points make adult interaction an equally important consideration.
Daily updates and activity photographs formed part of parent communication in March 2023. Staff also passed on children's next learning steps once they had achieved them. This gave families a picture of what their child had been doing, although practical suggestions for continuing that learning at home needed development.
Independence was built into ordinary routines in March 2023. Older children recognised their names to register themselves, helped distribute lunch equipment and served their own food. These were manageable responsibilities within the day, giving children opportunities to do things for themselves.
Staff used praise, modelled courteous behaviour and explained the effect of children's actions in March 2023. Reminders about nursery rules were accompanied by reasons. For a parent, that offers a more useful picture of behaviour support than a general promise about good manners.
At the March 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that the special educational needs coordinator arranged timely help, with staff working alongside speech and language therapists, other nurseries and the local authority. The important mechanism was coordinated support involving professionals beyond the setting.
In March 2023, staff had first-aid qualifications and took part in supervision, room meetings and team meetings. Further staff training was nevertheless an improvement priority. The current management structure includes an area manager, duty manager and deputy manager; the duty manager holds a degree in childcare and young people. Management structure and qualifications provide context, while the dated findings explain what staff development needed to address.

Opening hours are 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across 51 weeks of the year. Bank holidays and approximately a week at Christmas are closures. That Christmas break matters for families whose work continues through the festive period.
The booking options include full days and half days, with extra hours charged separately. Term-time places and flexibility for shift workers are also part of the service. These are different attendance choices, so the opening window should be read alongside the contracted pattern a family selects.
Government-funded childcare is accepted for eligible children from 9 months to 5 years. The entitlements include 30 hours for eligible working parents, 15 hours for children aged three and four, and 15 hours for some two-year-olds receiving additional family support. Working-parent codes need renewal every three months, with an application made before the relevant term's deadline. Tax-Free Childcare payments are accepted too.
Home-cooked meals are included, and the inclusive charging terms cover snacks, drinks, planned activities and their resources for all children, including those using funded hours. Families supply formula when needed, together with nappies, wipes and nappy cream; this also applies to funded attendance.
Some trips may carry a separate charge, with parents able to choose whether their child participates. Additional private hours are charged. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation, with the charging structure set out in its fees policy.
A registration charge and deposit accompany the signed contract. The registration charge is refundable after attendance begins within a reasonable period, and the deposit is refundable when the contract ends. Fees are normally paid ahead of each month; weekly payments are also accepted. Attendance-based annual charges are spread over twelve months, and absence, illness or holidays do not reduce them.
Ending the contract requires a month's written notice, submitted on the first day of a month. Charges continue during notice even if the child does not attend. A family that signs a contract and then does not start is liable for a month's notice charge.
Grange Road Nursery suits families looking for full-day or half-day care, including those considering term-time attendance or needing flexibility around shifts. Its enclosed outdoor space, Victorian surroundings and preschool technology give the setting a clear physical character. The March 2023 picture adds practical independence and learning through stories and hands-on play. The balancing point is equally concrete: extending children's learning, staff development and guidance for parents were improvement priorities. Those are useful subjects for a visit alongside the attendance contract.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall in March 2023 and judged safeguarding effective. Improvement priorities included extending learning during play, staff training and guidance for learning at home.
