Little Rays of Sunshine Daycare

At a Glance

In July 2021, termly Staff Promises gave Little Rays of Sunshine Daycare a recognisable thread: broadening children's real-life experiences, with seaside or farm trips among the examples. At its July 2021 inspection, Ofsted rated the setting Good overall. That judgement is a dated assessment, rather than a description of today's daily provision.

Based at 6 Oxford Road, Hartlepool, TS25 5SR, the nursery has capacity for 45 children. In July 2021, children attending ranged from birth to five years; this age range belongs to that visit.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care. Here, the July 2021 examples included language practice through play, physical activity and preparation for writing, showing how learning could fit into everyday experiences.

In July 2021, Staff Promises linked each term to real-life experiences, with seaside and farm trips given as examples. These promises gave children something concrete to explore beyond their familiar surroundings. Indoors, adults repeated words and actions during ball play through a tunnel, while older children discussed what they might take to the seaside.

Dough activities in July 2021 helped older children prepare their hands for writing. However, materials for practising emerging skills were not consistently accessible during independent play. Younger children could choose between water, sand, painting and biscuit decorating, but adult-led activities sometimes narrowed their choices: a wheel-painting task offered only black paint. Both independent practice and creative freedom needed attention.

Care and Support

At the July 2021 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities effective. These findings belong to that assessment.

During July 2021, key people recognised babies' tiredness, offered familiar comfort items and found somewhere quiet for them to rest. Care responded to individual signals. Staff also joined meetings with hospital consultants and other professionals supporting children, connecting nursery care with specialist involvement.

Written updates in July 2021 covered sleep, activities, nappy changes and meals. This gave parents practical information to carry care routines between home and nursery. Children also practised handwashing before helping set the table and used the stair handrail as part of learning about safety.

Practical Information

The address is 6 Oxford Road, Hartlepool, TS25 5SR. In July 2021, opening hours were Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 5.30pm, with bank holidays and two Christmas weeks excluded from year-round opening. These are historical opening arrangements.

Funded early education for children aged two, three and four was offered in July 2021. This describes participation at that time.

Things to Consider

  • Independent practice. In July 2021, older children could not always access materials to extend newly learned skills during their own play. Access to resources matters alongside adult-led teaching.
  • Creative choice. July 2021 activities sometimes followed adults' ideas too closely. Children's scope to choose colours and develop their own ideas is a useful point to observe.
  • Attendance planning. The hours and funded provision described above date from July 2021. What current attendance arrangements and written charge terms would apply to your child?

The Verdict

Little Rays of Sunshine Daycare suits consideration by families who value everyday language practice, responsive baby care and experiences beyond the nursery. Its July 2021 assessment provides useful detail about those priorities, alongside specific weaknesses in independent learning and creative choice. Keep that date central to the decision.
