Cowplain Day Nursery

At a Glance

Joey’s Field and a spacious sports hall give Cowplain Day Nursery two very different settings for active play: nature trails and pond dipping outdoors, bikes and balance equipment indoors. Physical activity has a clear place in the day. This is a nursery for children aged two to five, based at Cowplain Activities Centre on Padnell Road, Waterlooville, PO8 8EH, with capacity for 34 children.

Ofsted rated the nursery Good at its 3 December 2024 inspection. The practical offer includes shorter daytime sessions as well as an 8am to 6pm day, with funded childcare and separately charged consumables. For parents, the appeal combines substantial space for movement with play that develops language, imagination and independence.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The EYFS guides learning through play, exploration and creative thinking, indoors and outside. Communication, physical development and relationships sit alongside early reading, mathematics, understanding the world and creative expression. This is the shared early-years framework; Cowplain’s concrete resources explain how children can encounter it during their day.

Mark-making materials give children opportunities to experiment with writing before they can form words. Activities draw on their interests, making the first steps towards writing purposeful rather than an isolated exercise. Mathematical resources support sorting, recognising patterns and exploring size and shape.

A wooden play kitchen and dressing-up equipment support imaginative play. Past themes have included a dentist and an aeroplane, giving children different situations to act out together. Messy activities invite pouring, mixing and squeezing, with room to experiment rather than reproduce a set result. These offer different ways into play for children whose interests vary.

In December 2024, familiar stories prompted children to supply the next part themselves, while music and movement let them act out the narrative. Visits to a school library also brought borrowed books back to nursery. Conversation grew from children's play: making pretend fossils led to discussion about dinosaurs. Language was woven into activities rather than confined to story time.

There were also teaching points to address in December 2024. Staff did not consistently understand the intended learning behind the curriculum, and opportunities to develop number and shape knowledge were sometimes missed. Sorting resources alone are not the whole mathematical experience; how adults extend children's thinking matters too.

Outdoor and Community Life

Joey’s Field is a nature reserve with an outdoor classroom at a nearby infant school. Children can build dens, follow nature trails and try pond dipping; natural materials also support creative activities. Hills and tunnels add physical challenges. It gives outdoor learning a setting beyond ordinary play equipment.

Sports Hall equipment includes bikes, balls and balance beams, while parachute games encourage children to coordinate their actions with others. That indoor space offers another outlet for energetic play. In December 2024, children also played football, used balance bicycles and visited a park; community walks introduced road safety through practical experience.

Care and Support

Every child has a key person responsible for their daily development and wellbeing. Learning plans take account of what children already know and their experiences at home, helping connect nursery activities with family life. A qualified SENCO is part of the team, providing an identifiable role for additional-needs support.

At the December 2024 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and assessed SEND provision positively, with prompt support and cooperation between parents, professionals and other settings helping children progress. These are dated judgements about practice, rather than a promise about an individual child's experience.

In December 2024, key people held meetings with parents about children's development and next learning steps, and shared resources for use at home. Borrowing nursery books extended that connection into family reading. Staff also used sand timers to help children manage turns and music to signal tidying, giving everyday routines clear, understandable cues.

Quieter moments have their own space. The cushioned relaxation area has books, soft toys and music, allowing children to rest or have a calm conversation alongside the more active parts of the day. Parents supply a lunch box; breakfast, snacks and tea are provided by the nursery, with tea menus rotating over five weeks. In December 2024, staff also shared lunch-box photographs and suggestions with parents.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across 51 weeks of the year. The attendance choices are an 8am to 6pm day, a 9am to 1pm session, and days running from 9am to either 3pm or 4pm. Additional hours and a full-week booking are also offered, alongside a breakfast-club hour from 8am to 9am.

Absence affects the bill. Normal fees still apply during illness; holidays attract half the session charge when parents give four weeks' notice. This makes the notice requirement relevant to families planning time away. A registration charge applies, and current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.

Contact is by telephone on 07886 607198 or email at hello@cowplaindaynursery.co.uk. The address is Cowplain Activities Centre, Padnell Road, Waterlooville, PO8 8EH. Separate before- and after-school care serves children attending Padnell School, including taking children to school and collecting them afterwards.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded places are offered for eligible two-year-olds, alongside 15-hour and extended 30-hour funding for three- and four-year-olds. The funded hours for three- and four-year-olds can follow a standard or stretched arrangement. Private childcare is also offered, giving families attendance choices beyond the funded offer without implying that every pattern is covered by their entitlement.

Consumables carry a separate charge beside the daytime session prices. Lunch is supplied from home, while the nursery provides the other food described above. Funding, attendance hours and these separate items need to be considered together when comparing the total commitment.

Things to Consider

  • Teaching consistency. December 2024 brought two improvement priorities: clearer shared learning intentions and stronger teaching of number and shape through play. On a visit, ask staff to demonstrate how both now work in an everyday activity.
  • The outdoor routine. Joey’s Field offers pond dipping, den building and nature trails. Ask how these experiences fit into the attendance pattern you are considering, especially a shorter morning session.
  • The booking commitment. Illness does not reduce fees, and the holiday reduction depends on four weeks' notice. Assess those terms alongside the separate consumables charge before choosing your pattern.

The Verdict

Cowplain suits families seeking half days from 9am to 1pm or full days from 8am to 6pm, with further daytime choices ending at 3pm or 4pm and active play as a substantial part of nursery life. Joey’s Field and the sports hall give that emphasis tangible substance. The Good judgement from December 2024 is balanced by specific teaching improvements, making the quality of adult interaction an important part of the decision alongside the spaces and timetable.
