Water travelling through pipes, potatoes ready to dig and dance movements to master: outdoor exploration and learning through play shaped Dilwyn Playgroup’s September 2024 day. Its capacity is 13 children, with an accepted age range of 24 to 60 months. That is a whole-setting figure, not a daily group size.
At its September 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the playgroup Good and judged safeguarding effective. The strongest practical detail is the connection between physical activity, conversation and hands-on problem-solving.
In September 2024, children experimented with moving water from a barrel through pipes and harvested potatoes grown earlier in the year. Obstacle courses added physical challenges, while weekly forest school visits provided further outdoor learning. Children also used play equipment at the local school.
The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children’s learning, development and care, including learning through play. In September 2024, staff built counting into everyday routines and helped children explore shapes. Selected stories and songs supported vocabulary, alongside individual activities and work in small groups. Dance gave children opportunities to practise balance, different movements and listening to instructions.
Children also had a say. In September 2024, they voted for songs and stories and contributed ideas for resources to an improvement plan. This gave their preferences a practical role in shaping playgroup life.
At the September 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities progressed well, supported by early specialist referrals, individual play plans, manageable developmental targets and reviews involving parents.
In September 2024, staff used observations of development, children’s interests and learning at home to plan what came next. Parents received updates about learning and progress. Staff also sought views from families, children and local school teachers when reviewing practice, making communication part of planning rather than simply a progress update.

In September 2024, the playgroup provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. That dated participation should be distinguished from the terms of a particular family’s booking.
Dilwyn Playgroup suits families seeking term-time care within a 9am to 3pm opening window. Its September 2024 strengths lay in practical outdoor learning, language development and responsive support.
