Books, practical independence and visits to a local care home shaped Meltham Pre-school Playgroup C.I.C.'s day at its November 2023 inspection. At its November 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged the provision Good, with strengths in staff interactions, literacy and mathematical teaching. The appeal lies in the everyday detail: stories discussed together, children serving their own snacks and learning shared beyond the playgroup.
The setting has capacity for 53 children. In November 2023, children attending were aged two to four; the opening pattern was term-time weekdays.
In November 2023, the book of the week brought stories into group conversation and recitation. The Three Bears prompted children to discuss their porridge preferences. This gave a familiar story a practical connection to their own experiences, rather than leaving books as something adults simply read aloud.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care. Here, the November 2023 examples included counting with wooden counters, choosing activities and practising with tongs in the water area. The tongs linked play to a useful task: handling food independently at snack time.
Community experiences also featured in November 2023. Children recalled a fire station outing through photographs, while regular care home visits involved singing and making apple pies. These encounters introduced people and roles beyond the setting. Broadening that experience beyond the immediate community remained an improvement priority.
At the November 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and reported that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities were progressing well, supported by staff working with parents and external agencies.
During November 2023, staff gave children time to answer and share ideas, while consistent expectations supported considerate play and turn-taking. Healthy snack choices and toothbrushing routines made health part of ordinary daily activity.
Communication that month combined daily conversations with a pre-school app, and parents could attend stay-and-play sessions. These offered different ways to understand children's experiences, although engagement opportunities needed extending for working parents.

In November 2023, opening hours were 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday, during term time only. Funded early education for three- and four-year-old children formed part of the provision at that date. That was a daytime, school-term pattern, an important distinction for families organising care around work and holidays.
Meltham's November 2023 inspection presents a playgroup suited to families valuing stories, practical independence and community experiences within a term-time daytime routine. Its strongest examples are concrete and child-sized: talking about porridge, using tongs and singing with care home residents. The balance is clear, with broader cultural experiences and working-parent participation the two areas needing further development at that date.
