Bright Horizons Tingley Day Nursery and Preschool

At a Glance

A vegetable garden, music and movement, and a baby room with its own outdoor space give Tingley a recognisable character. Bright Horizons Tingley Day Nursery and Preschool takes children from 3 months to 5 years. There are 93 places in total across the nursery. Practical independence runs through its layout: low furniture puts resources within children's reach, while toddlers can choose between their room and the garden.

At its July 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding, with an ambitious curriculum, responsive communication support and effective safeguarding. That judgement needs to be read alongside later safeguarding action. A June 2026 organisational notice concerns the wider provider and is material to a family's decision here; it addresses organisation-wide systems, without establishing that every nursery had the same concerns.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Five playrooms give the nursery separate spaces for different stages of development. Resources are arranged at child height, making choosing an activity part of the day rather than something that always depends on an adult handing things out. The physical arrangement supports the emphasis on children making decisions for themselves.

The baby room combines sensory materials with a dedicated outdoor area and its own changing facilities, with an emphasis on emotional, physical and social development. Toddlers have room to explore, direct garden access and nearby toilet and changing facilities to support toilet training. Preschool has a teacher and school preparation built into its learning, connecting everyday nursery activities with the next stage.

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for learning, development and care: children build understanding through play, conversation and practical experiences. Alongside that common framework, Tingley uses the group-wide Bright Beginnings Curriculum. Its Ready for School programme gives older children structured opportunities to develop reading, writing, maths and other skills for starting school.

Boogie mites adds interactive movement and music, using songs as another way to explore the world. It is an addition parents can recognise in the child's day, rather than simply a curriculum label. Outdoor learning has a similarly concrete setting: children participate in caring for plants in the vegetable garden, and garden access lets them choose where to play and learn.

In July 2023, children investigated insects with magnifiers and babies explored the smells and textures of herbs. Older children tested objects in water and predicted what would float, while ramps and tubes prompted conversations about speed. These examples connect early science and maths with things children can handle and test, rather than leaving the ideas abstract.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

The Family app, a group-wide communication tool, keeps parents connected with their child's activities and development. It provides a practical connection between nursery life and home, especially when parents want to follow what has interested their child during the day.

In July 2023, babies sought closeness with familiar staff during songs and conversation. Books also gave children ways to discuss feelings through characters and stories. Parents' evenings and a lending library supported conversations about learning and shared reading at home, extending the relationship beyond routine handovers.

Individual communication needs received practical attention in July 2023. Staff undertook training for a child's needs and introduced picture cards and signing to help communication. A special educational needs coordinator also discussed support during the visit. These are concrete examples of adapted practice at that date, rather than a blanket promise about what any child will need now.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

Ofsted's June 2026 compliance outcome set out a Welfare Requirements Notice for the wider provider after weaknesses in organisational safeguarding oversight and practice, requiring action by 1 August 2026 and explaining that the concerns did not apply to every individual setting. The latest published position is that notice and its planned monitoring; the July 2023 safeguarding judgement should therefore be treated as historical.

Safeguarding procedures had also required action locally in June 2024, with staff training accepted as meeting the action in July 2024. Regulatory visits on 10 March and 22 April 2025 also found requirements were not being met, concerning safeguarding procedures and individual health needs respectively. The April concerns included a child accessing food incompatible with their dietary requirements and health needs. Following the safeguarding concerns, the provider investigated with guidance from other agencies, revisited training and audited relevant documentation; following the food incident, it provided medical assistance and revised procedures to prevent recurrence. Those recurring subjects make the implementation of procedures, and how concerns reach senior leaders, central considerations for families.

Food is prepared by an onsite chef, and private fees include meals and snacks. In July 2023, children practised serving food themselves and helping each other, making mealtimes part of learning independence as well as eating.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The nursery is at West Lea Park, off Heatherdale Road and Lowry Road, Tingley, Leeds, WF3 1TW. Opening hours are 7.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. It operates across the year, closing for an inset day, bank and public holidays, and the period between Christmas and New Year. Families needing care through school holidays can therefore plan around specific closures.

Funded childcare is organised in 10-hour sessions beginning when the nursery opens. Additional hours beyond that session are charged separately; buying them is not a condition of taking a funded place. This distinction matters when comparing the funded arrangement with the longer opening window.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded entitlement is offered, with 15-hour and 30-hour arrangements stretched over 50 weeks rather than confined to the 38-week term-time structure. Eligibility conditions apply. The charge structure separates funded hours, additional paid childcare and food, so a funded entitlement does not mean every part of attendance is covered.

Private fees include nappies, wipes, meals, snacks and formula for babies under 1 year. Food during funded hours carries a separate, non-mandatory charge, which is not a condition of accessing a funded place; consumables associated with funded hours are supplied by Bright Horizons. A registration charge applies, and payment is collected monthly in advance by direct debit. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.

Getting There

Onsite parking is available, and the location has links to the M62 and Morley train station. These are useful practical anchors for families combining nursery attendance with a commute.

Things to Consider

  • Organisational safeguarding action. The June 2026 notice required action by 1 August 2026 on leadership oversight, staff understanding and the handling of concerns. Ask how that response has changed practice at Tingley and what outcome has followed the notice.
  • Procedures in everyday care. Safeguarding and individual health needs were recurring subjects in the 2024 and 2025 regulatory activity. During a visit, discuss how staff receive, follow and review a child's care instructions, including dietary needs.
  • The funded attendance pattern. Funded care uses 10-hour sessions, with food charged separately and additional childcare hours treated separately. Request a written quotation showing the funded arrangement and any extras for the attendance you intend to use.

The Verdict

Tingley suits families seeking care across the year, whether using funded sessions or combining them with additional paid hours. Its garden access, plant care, music and structured school preparation give parents concrete reasons to consider it, while the July 2023 learning examples show how practical exploration was used at that time.

The later safeguarding position carries substantial weight. A decision should take account of the organisational notice and the repeated local procedural concerns, alongside the nursery's educational offer and practical arrangements.
