Future Einsteins Day Nursery, Churwell

At a Glance

A former church, large rooms filled with daylight and a garden for each room give Future Einsteins Day Nursery, Churwell its character. The setting at All Saints Church in Churwell, Morley has three rooms equipped with natural toys for exploration. Outdoor space belongs to each room rather than being a single destination for the whole nursery, giving families a concrete feature to weigh alongside the care and learning.

Ofsted graded the nursery Good on 5 October 2021. That judgement is a dated assessment: its strengths included carefully sequenced learning and communication, while the improvement point concerned how staff evaluated less structured toddler play. Children are accepted from 4 to 60 months. Opening hours run from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with bank holiday and Christmas closures.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care. In everyday terms, that brings communication, physical skills and social development into play and daily routines, rather than treating learning as a separate lesson.

In October 2021, activities followed children's interests while building on skills they already had. Babies experimented with feathers, watching them fall and discovering that blowing could move them. The value was in trying something and noticing what happened.

Older children tackled a different kind of challenge. In October 2021, preschool children used tongs to move natural objects between containers, then grouped and counted them. A nature table brought together hand control, sorting and early mathematics in one activity. Toddlers explored oranges through squeezing, tasting and smelling, and made imaginary dinosaur habitats using pumpkins and cereals. These examples show how sensory exploration and conversation could share the same activity.

Language also extended beyond naming familiar objects. In October 2021, children encountered vocabulary connected with oral health and practised holding pencils; some were beginning to recognise letter sounds. These were concrete steps towards later literacy, grounded in things children were doing and discussing.

Outdoor and Community Life

Each of the three rooms has access to its own garden. Natural toys sit within the indoor rooms, so exploration is part of the setting's physical arrangement as well as its outdoor offer. For families who value time outside, the room-by-room access is the useful detail.

A woodland garden is also being developed. It remains a project under development and should be considered on that basis rather than treated as a completed facility. The former church's architectural features and generous daylight give the indoor setting its own identity too.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

In October 2021, staff knew the skills they were working on with their key children and explained those next steps to parents. Families received ideas for continuing the learning at home. That made communication about more than a description of the day's activities: it connected what a child was practising at nursery with something parents could recognise and support.

Parent workshops offered another route into that understanding in October 2021. Adults could try activities themselves and see the purpose behind them. For a parent deciding how involved they want to be, this inspection-era example gives a useful picture of the relationship between home and nursery.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

At the October 2021 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective, good support for children with identified needs through work with families and professionals, and secure relationships between babies and staff. Those findings belong to that inspection date.

The practical care examples from October 2021 were small but telling. When babies wanted to use cups without lids, adults showed them how to hold the cup and encouraged their attempts. Children were also helped to think about other people's feelings and work towards resolving disagreements. Care and learning met in ordinary moments, from trying a new skill to managing a dispute.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Things to Consider

  • Toddler play. In October 2021, staff did not consistently notice when toddlers became less involved during unstructured play or investigate why. Ask how the toddler team now reviews these periods and brings children back into purposeful activity.
  • Gardens and the woodland project. Every room has its own garden, while the woodland garden is being developed. On a visit, explore how children use the existing gardens and what stage the woodland project has reached.
  • Attendance and costs. The opening window is 8am to 6pm on weekdays, with holiday closures. Which booking patterns, funded arrangements and meal or consumable charges would apply to your child's attendance?

The Verdict

Churwell will suit families who value a characterful building, daylight and garden access for each room. Its October 2021 assessment also gives concrete examples of exploratory learning, parent involvement and responsive care, alongside a specific toddler-room improvement point. The physical setting is a clear attraction; how the current toddler day works deserves equal attention when choosing it.
