Belgrave Playgroup

At a Glance

In July 2024, home languages and small steps towards independence gave Belgrave Playgroup its character. Based at Belgrave Neighbourhood Centre in Leicester, it has capacity for 30 children. At its July 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated it Good, judged safeguarding effective and found that individual attention supported the development of children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

The children attending in July 2024 were aged two to four. The picture from that month is of a playgroup where learning included shared construction, conversation and practical responsibilities, with two clear areas for further work.

The Nursery Experience

In July 2024, children practised cooperation by stacking large bricks into a tower, taking turns and rebuilding after it fell. Staff demonstrated how toy trains connected, then encouraged children to attempt it themselves. These were simple activities with a useful purpose: giving children opportunities to persist and solve problems.

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care. Here, the July 2024 examples included learning through play, practising language and managing everyday tasks. Gestures helped explain vocabulary, while conversations about different faiths and traditions introduced children to similarities and differences between people.

Children also took responsibility for familiar routines that month. They helped arrange chairs for snacks, poured drinks with adult support and collected their belongings before leaving. Independence was practised through manageable jobs.

Care and Support

In July 2024, settling began with information from parents, including which toys children already knew. Staff used that knowledge to make early experiences more familiar. Home languages were used alongside English, giving children another way into communication.

Support for SEND included pictures, repeated vocabulary and individual time for particular aspects of learning. Staff combined parental information with observations and assessments to decide what to teach next. Parents received updates about learning, and creativity workshops helped them extend activities at home; additional funding also supported a lending supply of toys and books.

School preparation in July 2024 included inviting teachers to meet the children. Everyday wellbeing work included handwashing before food, toothbrushing activities and reminders about using stair banisters and holding an adult's hand in the street.

Things to Consider

  • Conversation and healthy choices. In July 2024, Ofsted asked staff to develop exchanges that prompted children to think and answer, and to teach more about why food and drink choices matter. These are useful areas to explore on a visit.
  • Morning attendance. The July 2024 pattern was a term-time morning session. How would the playgroup's current attendance arrangements fit your family's week?

The Verdict

The practices observed in July 2024 point to Belgrave Playgroup as an option for families interested in a sessional setting with practical independence and support for home-language communication. Its July 2024 morning, term-time pattern is the relevant attendance model to weigh. The strongest examples are concrete: shared building, familiar toys for settling and resources that carry learning home. Deeper conversations and clearer teaching about healthy choices remain the dated improvement priorities.
