Beach outings, an outdoor reading space and an indoor soft play room give Hopscotch Peacehaven a clear character: children have several ways to move, explore and play beyond a table of activities. The garden combines climbing frames with sand and mud, while trips extend into the South Downs. This is a setting with room for both energetic play and quieter interests.
At its August 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Outstanding overall. That is a dated judgement, rather than an assessment of today's provision. The nursery has capacity for 60 children, accepting ages from 3 months to 60 months, and each child has a key person to connect care at nursery with family life.
The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care: play, conversation and practical experiences support their developing skills. At Peacehaven, the physical spaces make room for different kinds of activity. Children can climb and slide in the soft play room, explore the garden's mud area and sand pit, or spend time in its outdoor reading space. Active play and books both have a place.
Numbers Week in January 2024 shows how an idea was adapted for different stages. In the Baby Room, children moved cars fitted with pens across paper; toddlers built rockets from magnetic tiles and arranged blocks into numbers; preschool children combined number songs with finger painting and jigsaw puzzles. Number learning was folded into movement, construction and creative play, rather than confined to one activity.
In August 2022, children's interests also shaped activities: a liking for cars led to mark-making with foam. Children persisted with bead threading and helped friends find objects in a song bag. Those examples give a useful picture of the learning at that time, with opportunities to practise hand control, cooperation and perseverance alongside familiar interests.
Hopscotch Explorers, the group-wide outings programme, brings regular trips to Peacehaven Beach, the South Downs and places along the South Downs Way. These destinations add different outdoor settings to the nursery garden. The frequency is regular, rather than a fixed weekly promise.
In November 2024, the Every Child is an Artist exhibition displayed children's work for families and raised money for Amaze. This dated project gave children a tangible result to share beyond their everyday play.
Every child has a key person who builds a relationship with the child and their family. That gives parents a consistent connection for discussing development and helps staff understand the child beyond the nursery day. The emphasis is on working with families, rather than treating care and learning as separate conversations.
In August 2022, exchanges with parents influenced activities: children's enjoyment of making tea at home became tea-party play using scented tea bags. Children sought staff out for comfort and to share achievements. The connection between home interests and nursery experiences was practical, giving staff something familiar to build on.
At the August 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and described staff using advice from external professionals to address gaps in children's learning, alongside detailed knowledge of what individual children needed next. These findings matter for families seeking responsive support, while retaining their inspection date.
In August 2022, leaders had recognised that communication and language skills had weakened following the COVID-19 lockdowns and put a systematic response in place. Activities were adapted by stage: babies named familiar things during songs with animal masks, toddlers practised short phrases, and older children held conversations and followed instructions. Everyday independence also featured, from putting on shoes to learning safe ways to cut fruit. The examples show care and learning meeting in ordinary tasks.
Little Tums supplies meals made with fresh ingredients and offers options for different dietary needs; families can add hot lunches and teas or send a packed lunch. Breakfast, drinks, mid-session snacks and baby formula are included, as are nappies, wipes and creams.
The nursery opens from 8am to 5.30pm on weekdays and operates across the year, closing for bank holidays and one week at Christmas. For working families, the closing time is a concrete boundary to plan around; the Christmas closure also needs to fit household arrangements.
The address is 50 Steyning Avenue, Peacehaven, East Sussex, BN10 8HN. Enquiries can be made by telephone on 01273 584250 or by email to peacehaven@hopscotchmail.com. A visit-booking route is also offered.
Hopscotch Peacehaven accepts 15 and 30 hours of government-funded childcare. Acceptance of funding does not establish an individual family's entitlement or a particular attendance arrangement. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.
The food arrangement gives families a choice between added hot meals and food brought from home, alongside the included breakfast, drinks and snacks. Nappies, wipes, creams and baby formula are included too. That distinction is useful when comparing the everyday supplies a family needs to pack with the meal choices it wants to make.
Hopscotch Peacehaven suits families who value outdoor experiences, physical play and a consistent key-person relationship. The beach and South Downs outings give its day a recognisable local character, while indoor soft play and the garden offer activity closer to home. Its Outstanding judgement dates to August 2022; the current practical offer combines weekday opening, funded childcare and a choice of meal arrangements. The 5.30pm finish and Christmas closure are the clearest considerations for families planning care around work.
