YMCA Woodlands Nursery

At a Glance

Water play that leads to pouring milk, and dancing before lunch: YMCA Woodlands Nursery's January 2024 daily life connected play with practical independence. Small experiences had a clear purpose. At its 26 January 2024 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good overall and found safeguarding effective.

The nursery is in Birchwood, Lincoln, and accepts children aged 1 to 60 months, with capacity for 32 children. The clearest picture of its care comes from the January 2024 activities and relationships, alongside two improvement priorities: quicker access to specialist SEND support and stronger involvement of parents in learning at home.

The Nursery Experience

In January 2024, babies practised drinking from an open cup and serving their own snacks. Preschool children explored why animals migrate or hibernate. These examples put everyday independence alongside learning about the natural world, rather than treating preparation for the next stage as a single activity.

The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care; here, the January 2024 examples included learning through play and practising everyday skills. Water play gave children experience of transferring liquid between containers, which they then used when serving milk at mealtimes.

During that January, adults repeated useful words while babies played and introduced vocabulary to older children through activities. Before lunch, children of different ages danced together, with movements suited to their physical development. Babies beginning to walk had their key person nearby, while older children responded to movement instructions in songs.

Care and Support

In January 2024, children practised sharing equipment at the water tray and taking turns, while adults modelled kindness towards one another. Straightforward instructions also helped children manage routines, including clearing away after snacks. Care and learning met in these small responsibilities.

At the January 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that staff identified emerging special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), involved parents in targeted plans, but sometimes delayed seeking external specialist help. Identifying a need and obtaining the right help were separate steps; speed at the second step was an improvement priority.

Communication needed attention too. In January 2024, activity suggestions reached parents through an app, but some families did not understand them or know about them. Take-home activity packs were being prepared and had yet to be introduced. The practical issue was whether families could use the ideas, rather than simply receive them.

Practical Information

The address is Woodlands Infant & Nursery School, Whitethorn Grove, Off Regent Street, Birchwood, Lincoln, LN6 0PF. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with closures for bank holidays and the week between Christmas and New Year.

In January 2024, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. That is a dated funding position, separate from the current opening hours.

Things to Consider

  • Specialist support. Quicker referrals for emerging SEND were a January 2024 improvement priority. For a child needing additional help, the timing of external support matters alongside the nursery's own plans.
  • Learning at home. January 2024 activity suggestions did not reach every family effectively. Clear explanations matter if parents are to use them confidently.
  • Attendance and costs. Which booking patterns and funded-hours arrangements can be combined, and what would the written quotation include for meals and consumables?

The Verdict

YMCA Woodlands Nursery suits families seeking year-round weekday childcare, with a January 2024 picture of practical independence, language-rich play and shared routines. Its Good judgement gives that picture weight. The two improvement priorities deserve equal attention: timely specialist help and home-learning communication that families can actually use.
