Childville Pre School Gascoigne is a 30-place pre-school at 160-164 Ripple Road, Barking, IG11 7PR. Its latest inspection, in February 2023, judged its overall effectiveness Good and found safeguarding effective. That inspection is now more than three years old, so its account is best read as a dated picture of practice rather than a promise about today's routines.
The strongest thread in that picture is purposeful, child-chosen play. Children were confident, busy and building language, concentration and problem-solving through concrete activities rather than worksheets.
In February 2023, children chose between sand, play dough and self-portraits. Another activity asked them to count toy bugs into pots, describe them and balance them into a tower, connecting early mathematics with new vocabulary. Circle time used an attention bucket to build concentration. These are small examples, but together they show staff turning play into sustained thinking.
The pre-school follows the Early Years Foundation Stage, England's framework for early education and care. In practical terms, that means experiences should develop communication, physical and personal skills alongside literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts. Inspectors found that staff knew children well, used their earlier experiences to shape activities and assessed progress regularly.
Community learning also had a clear place in February 2023. Children took daily walks to listen for traffic and learn road safety, and visited a local market and shop to explore foods and items from different cultures. Indoor physical education added movement, although inspectors wanted stronger opportunities to run and climb outdoors.
Independence was woven into care in February 2023. Children practised using the bathroom, washing their hands and putting on shoes and coats. They also brushed their teeth together while singing a toothbrushing song, with staff modelling the routine and explaining why oral hygiene matters.
Safeguarding was effective at the inspection. Staff understood procedures and signs of harm, recruitment was secure, and risks were assessed within the pre-school and on local outings. Staff sought outside support when children needed it. Parents reported that children were happy, progressed and quickly used new language at home, though some were unclear about their child's next learning steps.

This was a Good pre-school at its February 2023 inspection, with persuasive examples of language-rich play, growing independence and practical community learning. The dated evidence also identifies clear questions about outdoor movement, challenge and parent communication. It is best suited to families seeking a sessional pre-school experience who value child-led activity and everyday self-care, provided the current attendance pattern meets their needs.
In February 2023, Ofsted judged the pre-school Good overall and found safeguarding effective. Inspectors described confident, happy children and purposeful self-chosen play.
