Books and songs introduced new words, while mathematics appeared across activities through numbers, shapes and measurements. The Early Years Foundation Stage means that play and adult guidance develop connected areas of learning, including communication, physical development, personal and social skills, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts. For a child, bubbles can prompt turn-taking and new words, while shapes and measurements make early mathematics part of ordinary play rather than a separate lesson. That made early concepts immediate and practical.

Outdoor learning happened every day by the time of that inspection. Trips beyond the setting brought neighbourhood life into children's learning. Links with local businesses widened that contact, giving children concrete ways to understand the people and places around them. Children were enthusiastic and curious during both guided and self-chosen activities, and their behaviour was strong throughout the inspection day. Staff also helped children practise everyday safety on stairs and during neighbourhood outings.

There was also a clear limitation. In November 2019, adult direction sometimes left older children too little scope to reason independently. Inspectors wanted adults to step back more often so older children could think through challenges for themselves.

In November 2019, staff formed close, caring bonds with children. The 2019 evidence portrayed the start of the day as calm and reassuring, with babies supported carefully through the settling process. Management invited feedback from families, staff and children, giving improvement work several perspectives.

Safeguarding was effective at the November 2019 inspection. Staff demonstrated sound safeguarding knowledge and response procedures, supported by continuing risk assessment. Children also practised everyday safety, making risk awareness part of their own learning as well as an adult responsibility.
