The Rivergate Centre setting is registered for children from three months to five years. Its strongest features are practical: books and mark-making materials sit throughout the nursery, children use the garden confidently, and teaching focuses on communication, physical and social development.

The Early Years Foundation Stage shapes the curriculum and builds the language, movement, relationships and early literacy children need for their next stage through play and adult interaction. Its priorities are visible in ordinary moments, rather than reserved for formal activities. In May 2024, children mixed shades of blue while painting and learned the word teal. Others repaired a torn pop-up book with adult help, turning care for resources into purposeful learning.

Outdoor activity has substance too. Indoor and garden areas were accessible to children, allowing them to choose resources and move confidently between experiences. Children read together in a garden story house, while staff used countdowns before jumping to help them judge risk and keep friends clear. Babies poured water into a tray for one another. These are small episodes, but they show learning woven into play rather than confined to set activities.

Literacy was a consistent thread across the setting. Older children returned books carefully to shelves, and books and mark-making equipment appeared in all areas. Clear expectations extended beyond resources: children shared, took turns and invited others into play. That combination gives early learning a social purpose, although Ofsted also found that the quality of adult interaction was not equally strong across every member of staff.

Key-person relationships helped children settle quickly at the latest inspection. Parents shared routines before children started and reported receiving useful information about nursery experiences and learning at home. Children were also seen sharing, taking turns and treating one another kindly. Healthy snacks and guidance about physical activity supported well-being, while low-level tissue stations gave children the means to manage parts of their own care.

Safeguarding arrangements were effective in May 2024. Children with SEND made good progress, supported by a curriculum centred on core developmental skills. Leaders worked with local-authority advisers, and staff received training, regular supervision and opportunities to develop their practice. Two improvements remain important: less-experienced staff need more consistent language-building interactions, and every adult needs to encourage older children to manage self-care rather than stepping in too quickly.

The nursery's current written quotation and booking terms should cover attendance patterns, funded-hours delivery, meals and consumables. The booking model also needs to make clear whether choices are structured as full-day, half-day, morning or afternoon sessions. Headline opening hours alone do not establish which products can actually be bought or how funded hours are arranged.

Capacity and day-to-day group size are different facts. Registration data gives an overall ceiling, while a family needs the current room allocation and usual group picture for its child's age. Settling arrangements also deserve close attention: the latest inspection found that sharing routines before the start helped children form secure relationships quickly.

• Consistency of interaction. Ofsted asked leaders to strengthen less-experienced staff's communication and language work. How leaders now observe coaching across the team is a useful visit question.
• Growing independence. Some adults served food or completed self-care tasks for older children. Current routines should show children practising these skills themselves.
• Practical terms. Attendance and charge categories need checking directly. Use the current written terms when comparing the overall cost and timetable.

Kiddies Lounge has moved decisively forward, and the May 2024 judgement is backed by warm relationships, purposeful play and confident use of indoor and outdoor spaces. It is best suited to families who value early language, books and practical independence, provided the nursery's current attendance pattern fits their week. The nursery should establish which attendance patterns it can currently sell before a family decides.
