Orange & Lemon

Small-group early learning, imaginative play and language sit at the centre of Orange & Lemon's published picture. The pre-school uses the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), England's framework for learning, development and care. This means children learn through play and planned activities, supported by a Key Person. Its settling-in approach is designed to flex around the child and family.

In September 2021, Orange & Lemon received Good overall, with Good judgements for education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management. Safeguarding arrangements were effective at that time. That picture needs the later regulatory context: in July 2025, Ofsted found unmet requirements following concerns about safeguarding procedures, staff training, key-person arrangements, ratios and premises safety. It recorded corrective action on outdoor safety, supervision and risk assessment.

Learning and named experiences

The EYFS is England's framework for children's learning, development and care. In practice, children learn mainly through play and planned experiences. Orange & Lemon describes work across its seven areas of learning, with role play, construction, storytelling, art, music, singing, water and sand activities all part of its published activity mix.

September 2021 adds useful detail to that approach. Children led imaginative play with toy trucks and diggers, then used books with staff to explore the vehicles further. Outside, they cycled up and down a small hill; bubble play became a problem-solving exercise when children found a way to keep the mixture working. The report also asked staff to give children more time to think and respond to questions.

Rooms and ages

In September 2021, the nursery's children were aged two to three. That dated account described indoor and outdoor play, factual books placed around the nursery, and activities intended to prompt curiosity and imaginative games. Children also helped to tidy up, giving ordinary routines a practical role in learning alongside planned activities.

Relationships and communication

The Key Person system gives each child a dedicated practitioner as the main point of contact for the child and parent or carer. Progress is recorded through day sheets, observations and other records, creating a continuing account of the child's development rather than a single end-of-term update.

Settling In is flexible around each child's and family's needs. For a child who needs more time to become comfortable with new adults or routines, that individual adjustment matters more than a standard first-week schedule.

Wellbeing and safeguarding

In September 2021, staff learned words children used at home, then used songs, books and play to develop English vocabulary. Children also practised personal care, including hand hygiene and toothbrushing after meals. Those routines linked communication, independence and wellbeing in the daily programme recorded at the time.

The July 2025 regulatory action is the more recent safeguarding-related fact. Ofsted found that some requirements were not met, then recorded measures to make the outdoor area safe, improve children's supervision and introduce detailed risk assessment. It also confirmed that the provider remained registered.

Sessions and attendance

The September 2021 report recorded term-time provision. This is a dated operational snapshot rather than a current session offer.

• Recent regulatory action. Ofsted's July 2025 action followed concerns covering safeguarding procedures, staffing and supervision, key-person arrangements, ratios and premises safety. Corrective action was recorded, so families should make current supervision and outdoor-risk arrangements a focused discussion before deciding.

• Settling In. The nursery describes a flexible, family-led approach rather than a fixed induction pattern. This may suit a child who benefits from a gradual start; discuss how it would be shaped for your child.
