Laurel Way Playgroup

Laurel Way Playgroup is a North London pre-school whose latest full inspection, on 26 January 2022, judged it Good across education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management. Safeguarding arrangements were effective at that inspection.

The strongest picture is of children who felt secure, made choices and grew in confidence. Staff also helped children build communication, physical and self-care skills. The 2022 report did identify two clear next steps: raise the consistency of teaching and interactions, and organise the pre-school day so that children remain engaged through transitions.

In January 2022, staff turned children's interest in London Bridge Is Falling Down into bridge-building with sticks, stones, wood and clay, then discussed other famous bridges. Another sequence used props to re-enact The Gruffalo before children built a house for its main character from wooden blocks. These are useful examples of adults extending an idea through talk, construction and imaginative play rather than moving children quickly to a new activity.

The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the framework: in daily terms, children develop communication, physical, personal and early academic skills through play and guided activity. The 2022 inspection found that children made good progress from their individual starting points through play, conversation, stories, practical tasks and adult support, although the quality of teaching was not uniformly ambitious.

Outdoors, children practised running, sliding, balancing, swinging and jumping in a well-organised area. That breadth matters because it gives physical development more substance than a short burst of free play.

Relationships were a strength in January 2022. Children formed close bonds with staff, and newcomers received consistent reassurance. Staff supported home languages as well as English, while stories, props and construction play helped children become confident talkers and interested readers.

Independence had a practical place in the day. Older children showed controlled pencil work, children used the toilet independently, put on coats for outdoor play and helped prepare tables for meals. Those routines build readiness for the next stage without turning pre-school into a classroom.

Safeguarding was effective at the 2022 inspection. Staff understood child-protection procedures and how to respond to concerns about colleagues; paediatric first-aid coverage, risk assessment and recruitment arrangements were also in place.
