Smart Learning Nursery is a small Edgware setting for children aged 10 months to five years. Its latest inspection, on 25 May 2023, judged it Good across education, behaviour, personal development and leadership. The most persuasive detail is not the label but the practice beneath it: children made good progress from their starting points, warm interactions supported cooperative play, and books held the attention of children learning English as an additional language.

The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the educational framework. In practical terms, this means building communication, physical development and personal skills through play and routines, while preparing older children for school. In May 2023, that could be seen in children learning what plants need before planting seeds in the garden, younger children sorting shapes and older children matching numerals to groups of objects.

Books were another clear thread. Children chose stories, listened to animated reading with props and met ambitious vocabulary in play. Outdoors, they used sand and water, ran and jumped, balanced an egg and spoon, and climbed. These are specific examples of language, mathematics and physical development working through activity rather than worksheets. The sequence matters: circle-time discussion about plants was recalled when children reached the garden, so talk fed directly into purposeful, memorable and hands-on learning for the children involved. Mathematical work also changed with children's stage, from sorting and shape recognition for younger children to numeral matching and early writing for older children.

The inspection found that leaders planned around children's interests and next steps. Staff got down to children's level and introduced ambitious words such as extraordinary. Story choice gave children some agency too: they explored books independently and requested favourites. For a parent, this points to a setting where vocabulary is deliberately extended rather than left to chance.

In May 2023, children settled with caring staff and relationships were warm and positive. Staff understood signs of abuse, referral routes and concerns about colleagues; daily risk assessments, supervision and recruitment procedures supported effective safeguarding. Clear expectations and adult role modelling helped children share, play together and behave well. Leaders monitored staff performance and offered development opportunities, connecting oversight with what children experienced in the room.

There were two useful development points. Some younger children needed more time to process questions and express their thoughts. Staff also served food and cleaned tables for children, missing chances to build independence through daily routines. Those findings are narrow but meaningful. Waiting after a question gives a younger child space to formulate language; involving children in clearing a table turns care into practical learning. The useful test now is whether staff can describe the changes made since May 2023.

Preparation for school was a strength at the same inspection. Staff linked nursery and home learning, supported mathematical knowledge and helped children towards their next stage. This is broader than practising early writing: confidence, communication, cooperation and self-care all affect how readily a child handles a larger setting.

The nursery is at Commercial Unit, Mayfair Court, 76 Stonegrove, Edgware, HA8 7UH. The age range is 10 months to five years. A direct nursery quotation is necessary for the current booking model, funding participation, meals, consumables and charge arrangements. Parents can then compare what a funded or privately paid session actually includes.

• Communication pace. The 2023 inspection found that some questions came too quickly for younger children. Ask how staff now give children time to think and respond.
• Independence at mealtimes. Staff were then doing tasks children could practise themselves. Ask what children currently pour, serve, clear or clean during routines.
• Attendance and costs. Confirm which full-day, part-day or other patterns the nursery currently sells, alongside funding, meals and consumables, before comparing the practical weekly cost.

This is a convincing option for families who value a small setting, book-rich language work and active outdoor learning. The May 2023 inspection shows good progress, positive relationships and effective safeguarding, balanced by precise questions about communication pace and independence. It may suit children needing either regular longer days or shorter part-day attendance, but families must first confirm that those distinct patterns are currently sold.
