Tinky's Day Nursery

A strong inspection picture is the clearest reason to consider Tinky's Day Nursery. Ofsted judged it Good in November 2022, when children formed trusting bonds with staff, behaved well and made good progress from their starting points. The setting has capacity for 75 children aged six months to five years at 278 Watford Way, London NW4 4UR. It is a sizeable early-years setting, but that whole-nursery capacity says nothing about the number of children together in any one group.

The inspection is now more than three years old, so its detail is a dated view rather than a description of today's routines. It nevertheless records a nursery where relationships, independence and purposeful play worked together.

In November 2022, staff planned from children's interests and learning styles, then identified next steps. This is the practical shape of an Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum: play and adult interaction build communication, physical development and personal skills towards children's next stage, rather than following school-style lessons.

The curriculum was responsive rather than generic. Adults shaped activities around what engaged each child, using those observations to decide what learning should come next.

Language ran through ordinary activity. Babies mixed jelly while adults repeated the word mix, staff narrated children's actions, and a specialist external provider led interactive storytelling. Ofsted's improvement point was equally specific: leaders needed to make the communication and language curriculum more ambitious so that children developed a richer vocabulary.

Social learning also happened through the day. Children took turns, shared resources and cared for friends; during a pretend birthday game, they made cakes from play dough and sang together. Clear routines helped children know what was expected while leaving them able to choose their play.

Physical development joined outdoor gross-motor challenge with indoor fine-motor practice. Children learned to manage physical risks in the garden and strengthened the hand muscles needed for later mark-making.

Relationships were a clear strength in November 2022. Children settled quickly, while close communication between staff and parents helped the transition from home. Staff also encouraged independence through serving food, pouring water and choosing play, turning routine moments into useful practice rather than doing everything for children.

Ofsted found safeguarding effective at the inspection. Staff knew how to respond to concerns, refreshed their knowledge through training and discussions, and understood children's dietary and medical needs. Leaders also worked with parents and external professionals on individual goals for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Recommended strategies were then built into support for each child's learning goals, making inclusion part of planning rather than a separate activity.

Staff well-being and development received attention too. The manager modelled practice and was approachable to the team, an important foundation for consistent care even though this remains an inspection-time finding rather than a statement about current personnel.

The nursery is at 278 Watford Way, London NW4 4UR and has capacity for 75 children from six months to five years. Its recorded opening window is 7.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. Full-day and half-day attendance are listed separately, but that opening window does not define the bookable start and finish times for either pattern.
