St Mary's Playgroup

St Mary's Playgroup is a small Crayford setting with 20 places in total. In June 2023, learning followed children's interests and turned ordinary materials into purposeful conversation. While making play dough, children measured ingredients, compared more and less, and heard words such as measure and elasticated. Colour mixing, herb growing, large-brush painting and energetic dancing broadened the day beyond one type of play.

The Early Years Foundation Stage gives the playgroup's learning its broad structure: communication, early mathematical thinking and physical development are built through play rather than taught as school lessons. In June 2023, practitioners used children's interests and adult interaction to develop those skills. Outdoors, children climbed, dug for bugs and worked together to identify minibeasts.

Relationships were a clear strength in June 2023. Familiar routines helped children feel safe, cooperate and form positive friendships. Inspectors saw additional needs being recognised and support coordinated across home, specialists and tailored teaching.

Safeguarding was effective at that inspection. Inspectors found staff alert to welfare concerns and leaders' safety procedures established. They nevertheless identified two improvements: deepen partnerships with parents around learning at home, and use routines such as snack time more effectively to build children's self-help skills.

It best suits families who value a small setting and interest-led learning, provided the current attendance pattern fits their week. They should weigh those strengths against the two development points.
