Young Foundations Pre-School

At a Glance

Young Foundations Pre-School is an Erith setting at Yarnton Way, DA18 4DR. Its most recent Ofsted inspection, on 21 February 2024, judged its overall effectiveness Good and found safeguarding arrangements effective.

The clearest strength is language. Inspectors found a language-rich curriculum in which staff introduced precise vocabulary during play, alongside reassuring staff relationships for children who had only recently joined.

The Nursery Experience

The Early Years Foundation Stage shapes learning through play, conversation and experiences across communication, physical, personal, social and other areas of development. In February 2024, children painting flowers learned the words bud and bloom. Cardboard boxes became a television for healthy-eating songs, then a hose for an imagined lava spill. These examples show practitioners extending vocabulary and imagination through children's chosen activity rather than separating learning from play.

Physical challenge had equal purpose. A varied obstacle course developed movement, perseverance and cooperation as children celebrated one another's success and returned to the challenge.

In February 2024, children made outings beyond the setting into several nearby community spaces. Parents were also invited to share stories in their home languages, connecting family language with children's developing English.

Care and Support

Relationships were a practical strength in February 2024: inspectors saw established staff bonds helping newly enrolled children adjust well. Practitioners knew children well, planned challenging next steps and supported independence in self-care, sharing and turn-taking. Timers helped children understand when a turn would come, and adults intervened promptly when children needed help regulating behaviour.

Safeguarding was effective at the 2024 inspection. Parents received regular opportunities to discuss learning, and the small staff team met daily. Two priorities remained: staff needed to hold back longer when difficulties arose so children could test their own ideas, and help them understand more clearly how their actions affect other people.

Practical Information

The pre-school is at Yarnton Way, Erith, DA18 4DR. In February 2024, it was a sessional setting centred on close relationships, language and imaginative play.

Things to Consider

  • Independent problem-solving. Adult help sometimes arrived too readily for children to try out a solution of their own. Families can explore how practitioners now balance encouragement with allowing productive struggle.
  • Understanding behaviour. Children needed more help to recognise how their actions affect others. This is a useful point to discuss alongside the setting's established use of timers and prompt adult support.

The Verdict

Young Foundations Pre-School suits families seeking a small setting where conversation, imaginative play and close relationships carry the day. The 2024 evidence is specific: flower painting grew vocabulary, boxes powered elaborate role play and an obstacle course mixed movement with cooperation. Its Good judgement and effective safeguarding provide an official quality baseline, while the two improvement points give families focused questions for a visit.
