Secure attachments, growing independence and purposeful outdoor exploration defined the experience recorded at St Michael's and St Matthews Nursery in August 2022. Ofsted judged the setting Good overall. The nursery, based at St Matthews Church on St Marys Road in London, has capacity for 46 children aged from three months to five years.
The 2022 visit found children happy, considerate and keen to choose their own play. Language and early mathematics were clear strengths, while leaders were asked to draw quieter children more successfully into large-group activities and broaden learning about cultures beyond the children's own community.
In August 2022, babies selected resources independently and older children helped to prepare tables and serve friends at meals. Staff followed children's interests and modelled vocabulary consistently. Comparison language and ideas such as half and whole turned everyday activity into early mathematical learning. The nursery works within the Early Years Foundation Stage. In parent language, that means practitioners use play, conversation and daily routines to develop communication, physical control, relationships, confidence and the foundations of literacy and mathematics rather than teaching a school-style timetable.
Outdoor activity had real substance at that visit. Children ran, climbed, rode bicycles, jumped and dug, then used magnifying glasses to examine a worm. They also grew food in the nursery garden, watching plants develop while learning where food comes from and how it connects to healthy eating.
Warm, dependable relationships gave children a settled base in August 2022, while encouragement helped even the youngest build self-belief. Independence was not reserved for preschool children: babies chose resources for themselves, while older children took responsibility at the table. Those small routines give children repeated chances to make decisions and contribute to their group. A tepee provided a calm space for rest and emotional regulation. Ofsted also found strong partnerships with parents and swift work with families and professionals when children with special educational needs or disabilities needed intervention.
Safeguarding arrangements were effective at the 2022 inspection. Managers completed suitability checks, staff understood referral routes and daily risk assessments covered the areas children used. Leaders also coordinated intervention with families and other professionals when a child with special educational needs or disabilities needed it. For parents, the significant point is the joined-up response recorded at that date, not a generic promise of inclusion.
The nursery is at St Matthews Church, St Marys Road, London NW10 4AU. Its age range runs from three months to five years, with 46 places in total. The register records full-day care, an all-year opening pattern and weekday hours from 8am to 6pm. These describe the broad booking model; families comparing specific days still need the current offer from the nursery.
Current provider-specific prices and funding terms belong in a written quotation. That matters because a full-day, all-year arrangement needs to be compared on the same basis as any alternative, including the treatment of meals, consumables and closures.
St Michael's and St Matthews Nursery had a convincing core in 2022: affectionate relationships, independence from babyhood, strong language teaching and a garden used for genuine discovery. The two improvement points matter, but they are specific rather than vague. Quieter children need deliberate access to group teaching, while cultural breadth requires more than reflecting the immediate community. Both questions are easy for a family to test through concrete examples rather than general assurances. This setting is most likely to appeal to families who value outdoor investigation and confidence-building care and need full-day, all-year provision, provided the available weekday pattern and practical terms suit their week.
Ofsted judged the nursery Good overall in August 2022. Children were settled and engaged, safeguarding arrangements were effective, and language and mathematical development were strengths.
The recorded age range is three months to five years, and the setting has capacity for 46 children in total.
In August 2022, staff built vocabulary and mathematical ideas into play, while garden growing and close observation of a worm connected curiosity with the natural world.
Warm relationships gave children a settled base in August 2022, and a tepee calm space helped them rest and regulate their emotions.
Families should establish current session choices, funding terms, food arrangements and how quieter children are included in group activities.
