The September 2022 full inspection judged all five published areas Outstanding and found safeguarding effective. That is substantial evidence about teaching, relationships and leadership at that date. It is not the whole current regulatory picture.

In July 2025, a compliance outcome found that requirements around children’s dietary needs and allergies had not been met. The provider took corrective action: staff revisited allergy training, food-handling practice moved into an observation programme, handwashing supervision was made more vigilant to reduce allergen cross-contamination, and water-based handwashing activities were increased. Families with an allergy-affected child should treat that later action as essential context, rather than relying on the 2022 inspection grade alone.

Learning and Named Experiences

The Early Years Foundation Stage is the national framework that guides learning, development and care from birth to five. Here, it is paired with Montessori philosophy and principles, alongside treasure baskets, heuristic play, cooking, songs, music, outdoor play and co-ordination activities. That gives the approach substance: young children are offered materials and repeated practical experiences, not a premature school routine.

Theatrebugs sessions pair music, dance and drama. The curriculum page also names gardening, cooking, sensory bottles, collage painting, gloop, and projects on hatching eggs and butterfly life cycles.

Outdoor and Sensory Spaces

Outdoor learning has unusually concrete features. The Sensory Garden uses herbs, a pond for investigating insects and wind chimes. The Water Wall uses tubes, funnels, water cans, buckets and bottles for pouring and water play, while the Maths Area combines natural objects with numbered plant pots, weighing scales and muffin tins. These are physical prompts for touching, comparing, pouring and investigating, rather than a generic outdoor claim.

The separate Sensory Room adds soft lighting, soothing sounds, fibre optics, bubble tubes, textured surfaces and cosy corners. It gives children a dedicated place for sensory exploration or a quieter interaction.

Relationships are structured around a key person for each child. The published role includes a baseline assessment when a child moves into a new room, sharing that with parents or carers, day-to-day updates and contact with appropriate professionals with parental consent where concerns arise. Famly carries daily eating, sleep, learning and care updates, with a weekly newsletter alongside it.

Food and allergy management therefore deserves direct attention. The nursery publishes advance menu planning and says it works with families on dietary requirements. In July 2025, the compliance outcome found unmet requirements in this area and recorded the corrective steps on training, food handling and handwashing. It does not make the subject a historic footnote for a family managing an allergy.

Starting is planned around three settling-in sessions, normally two hours each and usually arranged in the two weeks before the start date. Parents or carers can stay with their child, and further sessions may be available where needed.

Sessions and Attendance

Meals are planned in advance, with the nursery describing vegetarian, non-vegetarian and free-from choices for dietary preferences and allergies. Given the July 2025 action, the current arrangements for an individual child’s allergy must be confirmed directly before joining.

St Nicholas Nursery has unusually well-described sensory and outdoor provision. The July 2025 dietary and allergy compliance action must sit alongside the 2022 judgement. Corrective action is recorded, but a family whose child has an allergy should make its current application the decisive conversation.

It suits families who need either 08:00 to 18:00 full days or a repeated 08:00 to 13:00 morning or 13:00 to 18:00 afternoon pattern, and who value a term-time or full-year option. The strongest fit is likely to be for a child who will enjoy hands-on sensory, outdoor and creative activity, provided the booking threshold and current food-safety routine work for the family.
