The examples were concrete. Older children matched colours and shapes, including rectangles and triangles; younger children balanced and jumped on numbers and beams outdoors. This linked early mathematics to movement. It also showed that staff did not expect children at different stages to meet the same task in the same way.

External professionals led sport and French, with children naming colours in French and using sign language. Pens, scissors, masking tape and paper gave children several ways to practise control and make their own creations. Children with SEND drew on large whiteboards, while younger children manipulated sand dough. Outdoors, fishing rods were used to catch toy crabs and letters from water, combining physical coordination with recognition. Staff also offered outdoor activity throughout the year, making the garden part of learning rather than an occasional extra.

Children were happy, settled and eager to participate in March 2023. They followed routines, listened carefully and behaved well. A bell helped organise the day, and children understood red stop and green go signs at the garden door. These familiar cues supported safety and gave children clear expectations.

Independence was built into ordinary moments. Children removed their coats and put belongings in their own boxes. Older children buttered bread for snack and explained that butter comes from cows, joining self-care to conversation and knowledge. Staff planned from children's interests and expected them to take part, while children showed confidence in trying activities.

The inspection picture was strongest where learning, independence and safety overlapped. Water play involved catching letters as well as toy crabs; preparing bread for snack prompted talk about where butter comes from. Those details matter because they show adults drawing learning from ordinary routines and play, rather than relying only on formal group tasks.

Safeguarding was effective at that inspection. Staff understood signs of abuse and escalation routes, and kept the premises safe and secure. Ofsted nevertheless set three clear improvement points: collect fuller information from parents before children start, strengthen staff understanding of the two-year progress check and shared next steps, and adapt group activities more precisely for younger children.
