Bright Horizons Crofton Day Nursery and Preschool

Secure relationships are the clearest thread at Bright Horizons Crofton. The setting at 86 Crofton Lane, Petts Wood, has capacity for 68 children aged from three months to five years. Ofsted judged it Good in April 2023, finding effective safeguarding and an effective key-person system.

That judgement now needs to be read alongside a current organisation-wide regulatory action. In June 2026, Ofsted required Bright Horizons Family Solutions Limited to improve safeguarding leadership, governance, oversight and practice across its settings by 1 August 2026. Ofsted stressed that the action concerned organisational arrangements and did not indicate concerns at every individual setting; the provider remained registered.

In April 2023, children used three rooms arranged for different age groups. They chose resources and followed their interests, while staff sequenced learning so that knowledge, skills and independence developed over time. This is the Early Years Foundation Stage in practice: play, routines and adult guidance build communication, physical development and social confidence towards the next stage.

The roof terrace gave children space to run and build brick towers, and a quieter area offered a calmer place to learn. Children could move between energetic physical play and lower-stimulation learning rather than relying on one environment for every need. Stories and rhymes supported language. At lunch, children progressed from beakers to cups and then pouring from a jug; younger children practised with spoons, while older children used tongs and scissors with play dough. These small steps made independence part of ordinary routines rather than a separate exercise. For parents, that is useful evidence of how care tasks also became teaching moments.

Cooperation was visible too. Children learned to take turns and share, and inspectors described them as polite and caring towards others. Staff supported hygiene through handwashing before food and nose-wiping stations. Together, those details show a day in which personal care, behaviour and practical skill were woven through play.

Choice did not mean an unstructured curriculum. Practitioners understood what they wanted children to learn and used resources and routines to move learning forward. The inspection’s two improvement points matter here: richer explanations would stretch language further, while a more consistent approach to personal development would make expectations steadier across the team.

Young babies sought cuddles from staff during the 2023 inspection, a telling sign of secure bonds. The key-person system connected individual needs, wellbeing and next steps, and parents praised communication, events and gains in confidence and social skills.

Safeguarding was effective at that inspection. Staff understood signs of abuse and how to respond, while managers used safer recruitment and staff used head counts and a traffic-light system at mealtimes. Ofsted nevertheless asked the team to make its approach to personal development and British values more consistent, and to extend children's language through fuller explanations and better modelling of responses.

• Current safeguarding action. The priority is understanding what changed at Crofton following the organisation-wide Welfare Requirements Notice and seeing evidence that the required actions have been completed. This is the central current question because Ofsted had published no later outcome by 21 August 2026.
• Attendance and daily costs. Session patterns, exact times, minimum booking commitment, funded-hours arrangements, and the positions on meals and non-food consumables all need to be clear before comparing the total offer.
• Room arrangements. Today’s rooms and age groupings need comparing with the three-room structure seen in April 2023, especially for a baby who may need quieter care.

This is an inspection-era picture with real strengths: affectionate relationships, purposeful routines, child choice and a roof terrace that broadened physical play. It suits families considering full-day or part-day care who value independence built through everyday routines. They should, however, put the 2026 organisation-wide safeguarding action ahead of convenience and seek a clear account of the Crofton response before deciding. The Good judgement remains part of the record, but it predates that action.
