A stimulating curriculum and unusually strong parent partnership define NEST Nurseries. Ofsted judged the setting Good in January 2025, describing children as settled, engaged and progressing well. The registered setting occupies The Annex at Pickhurst Infant Academy in West Wickham.

All four graded areas were Good: quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management. Its strongest thread is purposeful, hands-on learning: mathematics, creative work, early science and outdoor exploration are woven through children's interests rather than treated as isolated exercises.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum works through areas of learning and children’s interests. In January 2025, staff used real wheels to explore circles and other shapes, counting songs and rhymes to build number knowledge, and comparative language such as more, less, tall and short. Tactile, open-ended activities gave those early ideas practical meaning. Scented play dough supported model-making, while paint and cornflour prompted children to investigate how materials, colours and textures change.

Outdoor learning had equal substance. Children searched for minibeasts on walks, planted strawberry and pumpkin seeds, and explored pushing and pulling. The spacious outdoor area gave children varied opportunities to practise balance, climbing and fine-motor control. That combination gives children repeated practice in physical confidence, coordination and investigation.

Whole-group stories and discussions supported language and literacy. A precise improvement point concerned listening: listening was not consistently enhanced during free play because environmental noise was not always managed well enough. The contrast matters for children who find busy soundscapes difficult, despite the more structured communication work.

Settling was thoughtful at the inspection. Home visits, family photographs and a morning greeting song helped children build familiarity, while staff's high expectations and positive behaviour management taught sharing and turn-taking. Independence was practical too: children collected their own plates and cups, served food from communal bowls, and practised putting on coats and shoes.

Parents received regular progress updates, could borrow books and joined shared activities, including a birdwatching walk. Children with special educational needs and disabilities were supported through individual plans, regular monitoring and targeted activities. This creates a clear cycle between identifying a need, planning support and checking its effect.

Safeguarding arrangements were effective in January 2025. Staff completed indoor and outdoor safety checks, while leaders used comprehensive recruitment procedures. Leadership included observation, supervision, individual improvement goals and professional development. One inspection activity also showed the limit of that oversight: juice-extraction equipment was too difficult for some children's age and development, leading Ofsted to identify resource selection and use as an area for improvement.
