Communication, independence and early intervention are the clearest strengths at this 50-place sessional playgroup on Plaistow Lane. Ofsted rated it Good in February 2024, with Good judgements across education, behaviour, personal development, and leadership and management. Safeguarding arrangements were effective.

The strongest provision sits around children who need extra help. Inspectors found excellent support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, including early intervention, work with external agencies, Makaton and strategies shared with parents. Relationships are warm too: children formed strong bonds with staff and peers, and approached adults for comfort or help.

The playgroup follows the Early Years Foundation Stage. This joins communication, physical and personal development with early literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts, using play and adult-led activity to build towards the next stage.

In February 2024, leaders planned a broad and balanced curriculum. Shape work asked older children to name shapes, discuss sides and corners, and combine them into pictures of houses and cars. Play-dough cakes and doughnuts prompted conversation, while filling and emptying containers sustained attention in adult-led water play. Fine-motor activities also prepared hands for early writing.

Language receives deliberate attention. Staff modelled and extended words, allowed children time to answer and ran a language intervention group for those needing more help. This gives communication a defined place in the curriculum rather than leaving it to incidental conversation.

In February 2024, children were happy to see staff and followed familiar routines. They managed belongings and toileting, then served their own food and drinks at mealtimes. Those small responsibilities build useful confidence.

Support for SEND was a standout finding. Leaders worked with outside agencies on developmental goals, and Makaton helped children communicate. Parents also received strategies and resources to continue learning at home, and partnership with parents was a strength.

There are two important qualifications. Staff did not always explain why behaviour was inappropriate or how it affected others, limiting children's understanding of feelings and consequences. Key-person interactions also needed to match individual children's learning needs more closely.

The trade-off lies in two clear improvement points around behaviour explanations and individualised key-person teaching. Parents who value targeted developmental support may find plenty to like, provided the sessional pattern fits their week.
