Fairfield Play Centre

Fairfield Play Centre is a 70-place childcare setting on Mary Terrace in Camden. Its April 2023 full inspection judged it Good across education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management. Children were seen settling quickly into a structured day shaped around their interests.

The clearest strengths were practical and child-centred: sustained concentration during hand painting and scented play dough, early mathematics woven into shop role play, and plenty of language modelling through songs and descriptive commentary. Safeguarding arrangements were effective at that inspection.

The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the educational framework. In everyday terms, that means staff plan play and routines to build communication, physical development, early literacy, mathematics, personal development and understanding of the world, rather than teaching a school-style timetable.

In April 2023, children counted and explored heavy, light and halves in a pretend shop. They balanced across wooden blocks, rocked together on a see-saw and strengthened their hands with paint spray bottles. Older children copied messages onto cards, while circle time, stories and familiar transitions gave the day a clear rhythm.

Language was a priority in April 2023. Staff used keywords, songs and running commentary, while children learning English could hear and use their home language during play. Children with special educational needs and disabilities received trained, structured individual support towards their targets.

Mealtimes also built independence: children served portions, cleared plates and helped prepare tables. Parents consulted during the inspection spoke positively about care, independence and learning progress.

• Technology in learning. The April 2023 inspection asked leaders to create more opportunities for children to engage and learn with technology. Families for whom this matters should explore how practice has developed since then.
• Current safety procedures. Ofsted found the required safeguarding and welfare actions from April 2026 met at its May 2026 monitoring visit. Ask how head counts, garden checks, mealtime supervision, safeguarding-lead cover and first-aid certification now operate day to day.
• Daily practicalities. Discuss the attendance pattern, food arrangements, consumables and funded-hours position before accepting a place, so the weekly routine and quotation are clear.

Fairfield Play Centre's strongest documented qualities are purposeful play, careful language work and practical independence. The April 2023 full inspection was positive, and the later welfare actions were recorded as met. It should appeal most to Camden families who value an interest-led day and want to examine the centre's current routines directly before deciding whether its attendance offer suits them.
